UNIX > DOS and Linux > Windows, right?

There's this little argument (yes, again :D :P) between me and joca... I say UNIX > DOS and Linux > Windows and M$ sucks... He believes otherwise...

So to settle this we (that means I :D :P) decided to make this thread and a poll, to decide what's correct...

So vote.

BTW: I'm really bad at winning polls but I'm getting my hopes up for this one cuz I know many people believe UNIX > DOS and Linux > Windows

BTW2: This is not a Mac related thread so no need to post about Mac unless you diss windows in that comment as well :D :P

Why do you need regular Wine? Try this: Uninstall Wine and Winex. Get the latest Winex (I actually recommend coughing up the minimal fee for the stable binaries download) and install. I only use Winex on my regular PC because the only Windows programs I run are games.

yeah winex is cool, I've heard...

However, due to my extremely bad luck, wine and winex just won't go along well on my PC :( Yeah, at first I install wine, I run the JK2 installation, BOOM it exits by itself. I install winex, it says "I can't go with wine blah blah"... So I'm stuck with wine which won't work for JK2...

oh well, maybe I'll just ask around to get info and help :D :P

Cmad: It means I will try using Linux on my older computer, not on this one.

I'm too lazy to try and figure out linux completely. And what is so bad about rebooting? OMFG 5 (even less sometimes) minutes out of your life... go outside.

Regarding support for games on Linux...Many of the better game developers are starting to support Linux. UT always did. Enemy Territory does. More will.

For those games that don't there's Winex. Now Winex says that it's a "compatibility layer" and not an emulator. "Emulator" brings to mind a dog-slow program running under a program to simulate Windoze running under Linux. Ick. Well, when I read the explanation of what a compatibility layer is, I said, "Oh. An emulator." But then I installed JK3 and ran it under Winex on a Linux box, and it actually runs faster and smoother than it ran on the same hardware when it was running in its native Windoze environment. So go figure. If you really want to play Windows games, apparently that's all the more reason to switch to Linux.

LOL! Heh, I remember when my dad had a webserver at a colocation center. He used to call there about every six months to say "Can you restart my box? Its the one with the Chiquita banana sticker on it." Yes, it actually had a Chiquita banana sticker where that little square indent is on some cases.

Speaking of updating Windoze...

yup... that reminds me of:

M$ produces stinky/sucky products so that they'll get us mad so that they'll get us to spend $$ for a patch which will fix not many stuff, so that we'll get another patch etc etc...

Openware just owns (and so does freeware btw)...

And I totally agree with you DeathScythe, anything that needs a security patch 1-2 times a year is better than anything that needs a patch 1-2 times a month.

Plus, anything that needs to be rebooted 1-2 times a year is really better than anything that needs to be rebooted 4-5 times a month (cough windows cough); I'm talking about servers.

Anything that you only have to patch security about 1-2 times per year is better than having to patch security 1-2 times per day.

SELECT [*] value=works FROM Windows.

nice Fate, but what does that gotta do with anything on this thread?

BTW: Bill Gates was really lucky his father was a not-so-poor (;)) lawyer, so the result was that he could actually continue DOS and have some help (*cough* no he didn't do it by himself, just with some help *cough*).

Minor errors in either presentation or conception.

Starts at UNIX (which is actually a tpye of OS and not any specific one). Then Apple (remember them?)had Bill Gates working for them back then. Since Apple didn't show enough interests in DOS, Gates buys it and begins marketing it. He starts M$ in 1985. Now, prior to this there was more companies making OS. One was Xerox (on which both the Mac OS and Windows is based for their graphical styling). Then Linux rolls around in 1991, back when Apple was just becoming Mac, Windows was 3.1, and gaming was switching from console to computer in a more serious way then ever before.

It's comfusing but there are plenty of webpages about it all if you google things like "history of windows" "history of linux" and "first graphical os"

Yeah, I like you JavaGuy, at last a reasonable man... Windows is not worth mentioning but joca forced me into this sin by saying Windows is totally better that Linux... I say wtf, and this thread is the result... heh...

Anyway, Jello:

If you want the PC just for the games (which I suppose is true for you by reading what you wrote), Linux is not exactly the "OMFG-OS" for you. It doesn't support games the way you'd like it to, but in a harder way. It's your choice anyway :)

BTW: wtf @ you people saying (Jello and Aratan): "i'll check it out on my old PC"... Is that a disease or something :P ?

Okay. Honestly, I dont really care if Linux > Windows or the other way around. I use windows xp, it works for me, it plays games, thats all I need. I'm gonna try Linux on my old computer (dual boot with XP too :P), and see how I like it. So, what it all comes down to, is whatever you like better.

The Academy could brand its own flavor of Linux! That would rule.

Seriously, anybody with real knowledge of computers knows that Linux is so far superior to Windows that it's not even worth discussing. Asking if Linux is better than Windows is like asking if eating pizza is better than sticking your hand in a shredder.

I won't get into the Mac discussion because the Mac kernel is now Unix, and Linux/Unix is like Coke/Pepsi. Take your pick.
