What is the average air speed velocity of an unmaided african swallow? hehe ok, you want the long or the short answer?

i know i know everyone always wants the long one....so here goes.....

For an animal or insect in flight, the Strouhal number is determined by the frequency (f ) of wing strokes, multiplied by the amplitude (A) of the wing, divided by the animal’s forward speed (U) through the air.

The Strouhal number is equal to f A/U, or :

f A
U

Before discussing what this ratio represents, let’s look at each of the three components: frequency, amplitude, and speed.

For winged flight, frequency (f ) is simply the number of wing beats per second. A complete wing beat has two parts, a downward flapping stroke for power and lift, and an upward stroke for recovery.

Although beats per second is an appropriate unit for measuring winged flight, frequency can also be measured more generally, in Hertz (Hz). Since 1 Hz = 1 cycle per second, the Common Sheathtail Bat cruises at a frequency of 8 Hz, and the Zebra Finch cruises at 26.9 Hz.

Also known as wingtip excursion, the amplitude (A) of the stroke is the vertical distance traveled by the tip of the wing during the flapping stroke.

Forward speed (U) in flight is measured as distance traveled per second. The Common Sheathtail Bat cruises at a speed of 6.1 meters per second, covering just over 3 meters in 1/2 second:

so lets throw some average numbers in:
African Swallow 20 g ≈ 18 Hz ≈ 18 cm
African Swallow ≈ 28–30 cm ≈ 14 Hz? ≈ 23 cm?

Averaging the above numbers and plugging them in to the Strouhal equation for cruising flight (fA/U = 7 beats per second * 0.18 meters per beat / 9.5 meters per second) yields a Strouhal number of roughly 0.13:

Although a definitive answer would of course require further measurements, published species-wide averages of wing length and body mass, initial Strouhal estimates based on those averages and cross-species comparisons, the Lund wind tunnel study of birds flying at a range of speeds, and revised Strouhal numbers based on that study all lead me to estimate that the average cruising airspeed velocity of an unladen African Swallow is roughly 11 meters per second, or 24 miles an hour.

:D hows that ?

Garos, you must count in the different factors, such as tireness, windspeed, etc, but I'll leave the details to Jaiko.

Thats just it axion , if cigeretes had been discovered yesterday, they probably would be illegal, the thing is now so many ppl are addicted to it that it would be hard to enforce, alot of people dont take into consideration the fact that it is dangerous to them because there is no Imminent danger, only when serious damage is dont do they realise.
But that doesnt mean that ppl who smoke are bad ppl, Not being a smoker i dont know how addictive it is.
Take care buddy, hope being grounded isnt too boring :)

Ok FaDed here goes.....:)
What is the meaing of life?, well i supose that because we are all different, our meanings are all different too. When you think of yourself, do you see a purpose? Who are you? what are your beleifs. And thats not just it, some people beleive the meaining of life is to simply "die" , some beleive that it is to "enjoy life" others beleive there is no meaning but to simply "exist" . I guess what im trying to say is the meaning to YOUR life, is what you make it :)

and your name....hmmmm,lets thinkkkk ahhhh got it :)
I believe that you stole the name off one of your Guitars, Did you name it after Fade to Black by metalica?
i bet you did :P

Actually bob, there is a reason why ppl cry, when you are sad your body creates toxins, which are bad for you.....When you cry it excreates the toxins from your body, thats why it always make you feel better when you cry.
However some may have a more spiritual or more personally gratifying answer to that, i know i have my own little reason, but you must find your own :)
