First of all I have been helping my dad set up a wirless network in my house for the past few days and thats why I havent been on much. Anyway, I've got a few questions.

First, I'm using the client computer with wireless networking. Well, I'm begining to believe its ability to connect to the router is compeletely random lol. Sometimes I can connect to the internet, sometimes I cant, sometimes I can view the other computer (the main one) and access its files, other times I can just see it, and other times I cant see it at all. I'm using a a Linksys Wireless-G 2.4 GHz USB netowrk adapter for the client. I want to know what the deal is with it connecting sometimes and sometimes not connecting and crap.

Second question is: I got Linux Mandrake 9.2 and I was wondreing if thers anyway to get it to see the network adapter in the USB port (It dosent now, it just sees something plugged in). I tried installing drivers but I get installation failed every time . On the box it says that the adapter is only compatible with Windows NT and XP (I'm on XP now, so it works). So, anyone who could help me with either of these problems it is greatly appreciated! Thanks

Edit: I am also looking for a way to transfter all of my music (4000 MB worth) from the other comp to this one, so I dont have to access it through the network every time I want to listen to music.

DOUBLE EDIT (w00t): Okay, so I decide to get rid of linux because its not gonna work with the network. Except... I dont know how. Windows dosent see the drive its installed on (E), and I went into linux and supposively formatted it, but I only formatted D (D and E are on the same partition), so now I have no way to get into linux and a missing E Drive :o. I know this because D + E are a split drive (They were both 1 drive at once), for a total of 40 GB, and now only D is showing up with 19.somethin GB. So... I need away to really format E and get rid of linux.

Check your cabling then. Reseat your power cable and both ends of your IDE ribbon. Worse case scenario you get to get a brand new hard drive! :D

Install the Sims on your D: drive. If it doesn't help you find your E: drive at least you'll have something to occupy your time. :)

Did you change/add a hard drive? Check all data cables (I recently solved an installation problem by discovering that a data cable was indeed securely plugged in...backwards) and power cables.

Next, go into BIOS setup. If BIOS doesn't see the drive, you're toast. No magical software will help you if you can't see the drives in BIOS.

Its only seeing one partition and thats the one on the D drive, and I know theres an E drive still out there (The original drive was split into 2 20 gb drives), and D is only showing up as 19.08 gb... I dun wanna buy partition magic :\

It shouldnt see drives. Fdisk should just see disk partitions. If all else fails use Partition Magic.

Okay Thanks, but my problem is that even dos wont see the E drive when I do fdisk. We are getting a wired network soon since this thing is total bs. Other then that I'll try the ftp thing.

a) Don't use USB network adapters. Send it back and get a PCI adapter. Make sure the chipset is compatible with your WAP's chipset.

b) If you can try to keep your client within 150ft of your WAP. Certain metals in your house may screw with the signal. If this is the case then you should tear down your walls and install curtains in their place. Easy access + a semblance of privacy. :)

c) Once your network is set up you can either use windows networking or set up an FTP server to transfer your stuff around. You can install IIS in Windows XP and set up an FTP server pretty quickly.

d) You can use the dos utility fdisk to blow out your D: and E: drive partitions. You'll most likely lose any data on your D: drive though. If you can purchase a copy of Partition Magic. It tries to rearrange partitions and preserve your data.

e) All that being said don't use wireless networking. You'll get better performance with a good wired network. Wireless networks are quite insecure unless youre taking extra lengths like only running IPSEC tunnels over it. There's also none of this range and interference crap to worry about. Send in all your wireless stuff and run wires in your walls. If your folks don't like that idea do it when they're asleep. :)
