Sup, I was reading slashdot early today, they usually run a "file sharing not cause a slump in CD sales, bite us RIAA, yadda, yadda" story once a month or so. Browsing through this monthes I got to thinking. There has got to be as much porn be swapped as music, I dont set any filters when searching on kazaa and I get like 3 porn files when I am searching for music. Has anyone heard of a porn site sueing anyone, some porn sites are probably in court enough ( being sued themselves, but thats a different story ) that they could squeeze a lawsuit in during lunch or something. Also, the best theatre by me is a MJR theatre before every movie they have this ad/commercial where a stunt man talks about how movies are worth it, piracy is bad, etc. A buddy of mine has ~110 illegal movies he has burned to DVD himself. I think he is sharing like 1/4 of that, not postive on the amount though. So maybe someone can enlighten me, we all know the RIAA has thier panties in a bunch, but why isnt anyone else doing this? Or are they and I just need to get out more? _______________ Silent Bob (Kevin Smith): You know, there's a million fine looking women in the world, dude. But they don't all bring you lasagna at work. The problem is that music isn't that much of an art anymore, it's a business. It kinda started when like Elvis and the Beatles. Once their record companies realised "Hey, we can make a TON of money from this", the artform formerly known as music started going downhill. Nowadays, if you look cool on MTV or whatever, you're not succesful. It's more about image these days than the actual content of music. I download over 10 files at least per day, i have over 600 songs on my pc which takes up about 60% of my 80gb hardrive. The reason i have so many is because kazaa lite is full of fake versions. if i got rid of all the fakes i would have about 200 files. The thing is i forget which is a fake song because they have the same name (im a dumbass) sooo i just never get round to deletin the fakes. I used to have the filter enabled but it usually disables loads of songs which i want to download which sucks, but if i leave it disabled and look up a song (especially uncensored songs) It comes up with all this crap. I searched for "From The Inside" by linkin park a few days ago and it came up with a file called "kiddy lolita sex" ![]() ![]() I think its cool that we can all get stuff for free but its to much hassle to get 1 song. Here's the real deal with the movie industry (MPAA). Buzz was right for the most part, but the MPAA is cracking down harder on pirates than you think, they're just going for the source. Ever been to a movie and seen ugly green dots flash on the screen (all the time... it drove me nuts in Master and Commander during a storm scene in which the screen was mostly white) or seen a weird patch of light on the screen (light flowing through a window in the projection booth with some random shape propped up in front of it.. nearly destroyed my viewing of the Last Samurai). Well the dots are called "Cap Code' (or Crap Code, as Roger Ebert puts it) and the light it just annoying, but they both are designed to be able to trace where a pirated copy originated from so as to punish the theater and highten security (not to mention to annoy the hell out of the overcharged moviegoer). The other thing the MPAA is doing is attacking their own member, rightfully. See, every year tons of DVDs are sent out to members of the Motion Pictures Academy of Arts and Sciences, the folks who vote for the Oscars. These screeners for year have had a warning flash at the bottom every couple minutes stating that they are not for reproduction... well some doofus's in the Academy are letting their DVDs be pirated, so the MPAA, backed by the major studios, decided to ban ALL DVD screeners. This, of course, pissed off TONS of smaller studios and distributors, since the DVD screeners were pretty much the only way for their movies to been seen and considered for awards. The MPAA has been loathe to reverse their position, but I think (I'm not sure) as of right now they're allowing limited DVD releases that are labelled and have CrapCode. So the MPAA isn't QUITE as obnoxious as the RIAA, but they're doing some things that on the surface seem like good, rational, ideas, but yet are still screwing not only the audience but their own members as well. However, I still support the MPAA 10000% more than the RIAA, because as a filmmaker, I understand the huge investment and massive quanities of people who work on a movie (like that set guy) that the music industry doesn't even begin to touch. Every little cent really does count for most movies to break even (ignore no-brainers like Spiderman and LotR) _______________ -Academy Leader/Dictator/Defeater of DJ Sith and JACen Solo in the JAK+ Tournament -I do think it (the JA) will help convert dozens, maybe hundreds, to the dork nation... --me |

Well here I go, off on a rant again. DJ well put, small labels are the ones who need the support. Big business already has the money and why should we give them more of ours? I won't spend more than 20 dollars on a show ticket, no matter how much I like the band. The industry has become nothing more than a huge money machine. With the entire pop genre telling the entire country "Look at me, I'm rich. Wouldn't you like to be me? I have everything you could ever want, except a soul. If you work hard and if you are really lucky, unlike me I'm talented, you could be where I am some day." They have the ear of everyone out there. Just look at the number one selling album of this last year, 50 Cent's "Get rich or die trying". WTF is that?! Most peole spend some much time trying to be like these icons and flaunt the riches they don't have because of these morons being mass marketed. When's the last time you heard a song you couldn't stand at first, yet it is still played 50 times a day. After a while you don't mind it and before you know you actually like it. Hmm wonder how that happened. Even these so called artists are nothing more than puppets. They are given a little piece of the pie and then put in the spotlight so no one pays attention to the real bastards behind it all. They have everyone so distracted with chasing cars, clothes, cologne, etc.. we don't have time to pay attention to anything else. Much less how much time is spent by others trying to figure out how to screw you every which way they can. Then they make us think we have a real say in what goes on with these moronic TV shows like american idol. When's the last time anyone has heard anything from those idiots that won the first one? In short they aren't getting another red cent out of me if I can help it. The RIAA is just another sytem that needs to be torn down and rebuilt to reflect what the listeners want. **** your heroes Live your life Down with the system WAKE UP SILENT MAJORITY TSOL This comment was edited by Xipkell on Jan 06 2004 10:47pm. |

The motion picture industry also isn't making as big a deal I think, because they don't have an excuse like the music industry. Most of the time when a movie comes out online when its in theaters its going to be someone with a camera in a theater. Really crappy quality. Most people may watch it on the computer but they'll likely see it in theaters as well. So the movie already got their money. If the movie is out on tape and dvd, and you can get a good quality version on your computer, well you're still limited to your computer in most cases. Sometimes you may be able to get it burned to a dvd that will play in a dvd player. The movie industry is still making alot of money on their products and usually a slump in ticket sales or dvd sales from one year to the next can be seen by what movies have been out. Theforce.net has a post about how 2003 had few ticket sales than 2002 because there weren't any movies like Episode 2 and Spider-man. I'll bet 2004 will have a much higher ticket sales. Basically movie companies aren't making the excuse that they're losing money from filesharing like the music industry. The music industry doesn't want to admit that its their pumping out of garbage that is hurting them. As for DJ's little comment about he'd hate to see what this administration would do to censor the porn industry. I don't think so, even though Bush is a bit of a bible thumper. Republicans tend to be for free speech and well porn is free speech. If you remember its Democrats like Tipper Gore and them that wanted to censor the music industry. Those are the types that would want to make it illegal to protect the children. I'd say Republican's would want just more assurance that its not getting into the hands of children i.e. parents actually doing their jobs and making sure their kids aren't looking at filth online. _______________ When you are going through Hell, keep going. -Sir Winston Churchill. The RIAA is slowly coming around to the fact that their business model is out of date with current technology and the grey haired white millionaires at the top of the towers are reacting to file swapping they way they know how. Time for a management change. I haven't bought a CD from a major label in about 3 years. Go to shows and buy the band's CD. Buy direct from indie labels (I reccomend Asian Man Records) ![]() Why don't pornographers go after file swappers? Many reasons. a) Pornographers suing file swappers throws porn further into the spotlight. They don't want that. We have a president who on TV said he'd amend the Constitution to make marriage legal only for a man and a woman. God knows what laws the administration would make to hamper the porn industry. b) I got this from the Ron Jeremy documentary. (Go watch it. It's short on porn and very funny and entertaining) Porn folks have been some of the first to embrace new technology, like the CD Rom, DVD, and the Internet. They can look at the file swapping trends and see how they can use it to their advantage, market a business around it. Exactly the opposite of what the RIAA is doing. c) File swappers get an image into their heads. Its the same reason why Adobe isn't actively suing all those millions of kids with warez versions of Photoshop. They cut their teeth on it, and when the time comes to use it professionally they'll use adobe products. Same with porn. A guy with 3,000 Jenna Jameson vids will be more likely to buy one if they're ever browsing around a porno shop (as opposed to some other porn actress/actor's video). _______________ My car is made of Nerf. |
