I would say make up your own programming language. Then you could build a decoder ring to read it:D

ur right, pike, (rhyhmes ;)
but C/C++ is neat, the neat thing is pointer arithmetic. when u dont need the speed or flexibility Id go by java, especially as a beginner. no tangling references etc.

Hey I'm a second year student in Computer Science and I'll tell you what they teach, although I dunno if it'd help you in real life =)

Java - I learned this on my own anyways, it was not that hard. My first language was Turing

C, C++ - Industry standards. People usually recommend that you learn something like Java first... But I don't know why, it doesn't seem particularly hard. C is lower level than most languages, this allows you a lot of freedom and flexibility, however you may learn 'tricks' that become bad habits. UNDERSTAND POINTERS!

Unix scripting - very useful if you use *nix systems

COBOL - Oh god why do they teach this!!! And in a business course too. I don't understand. This language went out with the Bronze Age...

Prolog - Very interesting language. Learn it if you plan to do AI or robotics.

Assembly - If you plan to write device drivers, operating systems, hack or crack things, you'll need this language. It's different for every CPU.

As a side note I'll tell you about my friend. He's 18, 2 years younger than me, but in the same year and program. He programs the Unix servers for the freaking Toronto Stock Exchange. He's written his own quake-like 3D engine. He's also failing Comp Sci  Mostly because the work is so disinteresting/unchallenging to him

I forgot to say that I'm still a student majoring in software development .
I started of with C and moved on the Delphi and C++ later. Haven't taken any JAVA classes (studied it by myself), but I also still think you should start of with that for three reaons (at least).
1. There are loads of free JAVA stuff on the web.
2. It's easy to move to C++ like fizz said
3. Borland JBuilder 8 personal edition is free for non-commercial use http://www.borland.com/jbuilder

[edit]
One more thing. Does someone use C# or have some experiance with it? Syntax is a lot like VB, but how is it in practical use?

Someone told me (another pro programmer) that if you have little to no programming experience, to start out with either HTML or Visual Basic. I used to program in Atari BASIC in the '80s and that's what this dude told me. I would have picked up VB by now, but it cost too much $$$. So for now I'll just stick to being a PC tech.

as I am a professional programmer, I can tell, if you have really no experience at all, try to start of with Java. do not bother about the technical background, but java makes it simple to produce stable programs. after some time you could easily switch over to C++.

If you have _some_ experience I recommend you get into C, C++ and then JAVA and the others.
