college major choice... please give some advice

I am choosing which subject to be my major in university and I have focused my choice on either BioTechnology (this is about genetics, DNA, even gm food and cloning!) or Environmental Science (this is about conservation, pollution control, biodiversity, etc. You can see these guys at work in Discovery Channel)

Basically the BioTech is sure to be more prospective in the future and is easier to find research funding and have a vast developement potential (hey even the SARS virus sequencing are done by BioTech specialists)

but I am more interested in Environmental Science (I've been fond of it since I was a kiddo!:)) and I am more eager to help out in environmental problems and going to field trips than staying in a laboratory doing DNA sequencing everyday

can you give me some advice??
I would appreciate any:):)

go environmental. bio-tech doesn't teach you how to create a clone army, so it is pointless.

anyway, do whatever you LIKE more.

my example: i am studying Ancient History. future prospectives are close to 0, but i love the subject so i'm enjoying my time.

wow, that's a broad brush your painting with there DJ, college students don't know how to change a tire or pay rent? i thought we were past the days of anti-intellectualism. i would think the people that have no idea how the "real world" works are the by-product of sheltered lives, which is the result of bad parenting. i would agree there are far too many kids that live their lives as if they are the only person that matters (often a result of rich parents that would rather throw money than time at their kids) and then mommy and daddy send 'em off to college and they still think the world revolves around them. but that's not the result nor fault of the college or university.

just makes me cringe when i people equate the pursuit of education and intellectual improvement to real world ineptitude. that's a bunch of crap and you know it. the real problem lies with the self-centered people that don't ever stop to think about the consequences of their actions.

hopefully this comes off as a rant that directed more at the people you're complaining about DJ, rather than a rant against you. i don't necessarily disagree, i just think you're putting the blame in the wrong place :)

this argument is going pointless

everyone have different view, have different way of doing stuff, and certainly different life standards

just wanna say that there's more than 1 way of doing something
and the world changes all the time. sticking to old rules all the time might get you screwed~
and of course one man's meat can be another man's poison

Jedi: They don't know how to change a tire. They don't know how to pay monthly rent and be contributing members of society. They don't know a damn thing about life. There are of course exceptions to the rule. I'm not saying you have to work a "bad" job or whatever. I'm just saying you need to go out and experience life before you go back to school.

FWIW nothing I've ever done at any of my jobs is based on what I've learned in college. I'm self taught and proud, damnit. :D

what ive noticed about college is that you learn more from the BS classes then from the classes you have to take. i am like the king of obscure classes. for some reason when ever i am taking a class that i dont need i always seem to learn more. i dont know why that is.....they just seem more interesting

I agree with DJ as well.
I stayed off any educational thingies for a good year, and that was too less, I think. I had to learn some stuff the hard way (and still learning lol) - well RL (TM) likes teaching things the hard way, but THAT IS JUST THE WAY it goes.

I mean I like my studies and all, but in the long run I really do envy some of my friends who chose to work right off the bat.

life is hard, but not fair.

You gotta do what will make you the happiest later on in life. You gotta think about your life AFTER college. If you enjoy the Great Outdoors that much, Environmental Studies sounds like the better choice.

Besides, our planet is in need!!!

I can assure you I won't be one of 'em!!

as for the experience, I won't worry about it 'cause I had worked summer jobs, dealt with various people when managing school functions, went to overseas exchange, practised experimenting in a lab, thrown myself camping in remote forests and islands..... blahblahblah (lol of course some are exaggerated..hehe)

I am now freaked off by the application payment procedures!!!
so complicated to just pay a few hundred bucks

Sup,

DJ I couldnt agree less.

If you did a survey of all the ppl, who "took a year off" I bet you would find an extreme large number of ppl who are "still wait to go back." If you want real world experience do it over summer break, So far I have.

1.) Worked as a programmer, writing perl/C code to test routing software, on various flavors of *nix.

2.) Took a summer off to play alot, and worked various jobs, to make ends meet.

3.) Worked my ass off at shit jobs, so I could afford to go backpacking for a month, including 1 day of white water rafting, and one day of rock climbing.

4.) Worked at a shit hole, Tar plant, in the worst part of Detroit, I know 3 guys who work there who are 6'2 ~350 lbs, and run red lights in the neighbor hood. I was surronded by deadbeats, and had to wear 2 layers of winter weight coveralls plus a resperator, in 90 F degree heat working around 500 F hazardous materials. Cause I really needed money.

No experience? I would say I fit a good amount of shit in, while Im not hiding in library learning about electricty vectors.

Bah. Don't go to college. Get a job and live in the real world for at least a year first. Most college students I know are the stupidest bunck of so and so's I've ever met because they expressly lack any real world knowledge. When you're ready to go choose something you like, not what will make you the most money.

yes I have the decision in my mind already
its just that I wanna collect some more opinions before I make the final choice

what kind of job I am to do actually do not matter very much to me, but what I am to study in college is!!

yeah man, just go with the flow. by the time you get to make this decision you might already be on a different path.

both are great fields to get into. i dont understand why everyone keeps dissing biotech though. if it wasnt for biotechnology then we wouldnt have vacines for both human and enviromental purposes.

Dont listen to what anyone says in this thread, the choice is completely yours, sit down and think about it, choosing this course can and probably will alter your life, dont do it because of some comments in here, u need to choose the course u want for the reasons u choose, not to please the vote in here.

If u dont choose yourself then u have already failed...........
