Bill Gates's Statement about Windows security | |
_cmad_ - ex-Student ![]() |
Yeah he talked about Windows security ![]() ![]() You can find the newsgroup post at: Newsgroup post here's what he said: Quote: MM: There's a perception that Windows is somehow more vulnerable than Mac or Linux. Bill Gates: It's just not; it's just not. But there's a weird sense that it may feel like it's true, which is [why] we get attacked more. Our technology at this point is way better in terms of how few defects we have. Just go through and compare, say, with Linux, how many defects we have, how quickly we fix those defects, how our system is for getting the updates out for those defects. Take those objective criteria, and we are better. Unfortunately, because our systems are so dense, we have two challenges. Our systems are so dense—high share—and because people attack us for glory, there are more attacks. So we need to make sure these attacks can't succeed. In a sense, by making sure we can block people who try to [attack] for glory, it actually gives the users this additional benefit that means we're blocking it for people who are actually maliciously coming in to steal information. The other operating systems won't be as far along on that learning curve. But right now, all people can see is that there's some pain. And even the people who haven't been affected are somewhat affected because they're worrying, "Jeez, could this happen to me? Do I have these things right?" And it's a real shame that people have to read about what a firewall is. It's a nightmare. We and their broadband providers should say "Hey, here's how you set this thing up, and you will be fine. Don't let people get you all scared or thinking you have to buy a bunch of expensive stuff." I would really love some comments on this ![]() ![]() _______________ Your friends of today, are your enemies of tomorrow. This post was edited by _cmad_ on Feb 28 2004 02:14pm. |

well, I first touched a computer since I was five You are safe to say that I was raised with computers, and know my way around them quite well... I first used Windows 3.11, which was one of the very first, I believe. Of course I upgraded to Win 98 and later I upgraded to Win ME. I never upgraded to XP because of the lots of games I have, and lots of programs that still aren't compatible with Win XP. I agree... Microsoft Sucks! But then, I'm so used to using Windows that I'll never turn to another OS. Out of fear of f*cking everything up (again) ![]() _______________ Visit the Belouve Family Website! hmm Interesting.. I have been using M$ windows since windows 95 back on my pentium 150, and used windows 3.1 back in teh day. yeah i was amazed with windows, but once i gained some knowledge and learned more about pc's and the industry. I saw things i didnt like. Poor coding practice, as in not fixing bugs, releasing os with horrible exploits. and bloating the operating system to all hell. then xp came and i lost all faith, and now longhorn... HA all i can do is laugh. So a few years after i got into computers, this would be about 5 yers a go, i discovered linux. and oh man how i love it. 100% customizable operating system, free software, extreamly stable, no need to reboot 10000 times on install. I think microsoft should get out of the operating system buisness, they do make good software VS .net is good, MS office is ok, office 2k is the best version hands down. just my 2cents _______________ When a Man lies he murder's some part of the world. Something else to consider: Since 1994 Microsoft has continually tried to bully hardware vendors to prevent them from providing Linux device drivers and to make them withhold from the public the information we need to write the device drivers ourselves (writing a device driver is not as difficult as one might suppose). Unlike the DOJ, I don't see anything wrong with MS having exclusive contracts with certain computer vendors. If MS tells a vendor of laptops, "We'll sell you installations of Windblows for your computers at a good rate, but in return you promise not to sell computers with another OS," that's just good business. Hardball, yes, but nobody is forced to do anything. If the vendor doesn't think Microsoft's offer is worth the tradeoff, said vendor is free to tell Bill to get knotted. If the vendor accepts the offer, then by definition the vendor values whatever it gets from MS more than what it's giving up. This is just econ 101, but it escapes the grasp of most in politics. Plenty of other businesses have comparable agreements all the time, and the government doesn't get its panties in a twist. Hell, it's illegal to compete with the Post Office for First Class mail delivery, so obviously the government is not really opposed on principle to no-compete agreements, and in fact no-compete agreements can be economically advantageous for consumers as well (though not in the case of the Post Office!). In the case of the device driver thing, what's interesting is that it clearly shows Microsoft's own evaluation of Windows: In the opinion of Microsoft, people would flock to Linux in droves if it were compatible with more hardware. If MS didn't believe that, they would have no objection to the creation of Linux device drivers. This fact is obviously not lost on the hardware vendors: Since 1994, the picture has changed, and most hardware manufacturers now do provide Linux device drivers. Support for them is often spotty, but they are provided. Microsoft's fear is being realized; now that most systems are Linux-compatible, lots more people are trying it. _______________ My signature is only one line. You're welcome. |

You know what Gates ought to do? He should brand his own flavor of Linux. This is not as crazy as it sounds. I grudgingly admit that some real innovation has come out of Microsoft, but for the most part Microsoft's strength has been in marketing things that have already been proven elsewhere. Even their original product, DOS, was purchased from someone else, not developed by MS. There's Re Hat Linux, Mandrake Linux, Debian and countless others. Why not a Microsoft Linux? Yes they'd have to change their business model a little to comply with the GNU license agreement, but free software is not something new to Microsoft. In fact, giving away IE for free was one of the things that supposedly got MS in trouble with the Justice Department. Free software does not mean you can't make money from it, but it does mean MS would have to change its business model. Biologists have a word for those who can't adapt to changing times: Extinct. MS Linux could be a free download. There could be a pay version that comes with extra goodies, but that would probably just be marketed to businesses that have budgets for powerful servers and workstations. By putting lots of extra goodies into the free version of MS Linux, MS could ensure that lots of people use it, thereby keeping the MS name in the public eye and on everyone's desktop, which is what they want. Their commercial software--the database servers and office applications and stuff like that--would run on any Linux distro, and that's where they'd make much of their money. This would positively shock the software world, but it's a viable plan. My hope: Linux could make MS software more secure. My fear: MS could make Linux less secure, at least its own distro of it. _______________ My signature is only one line. You're welcome. |

Quote: I actaully think this should be in the general discussion forum. Well the truth is: Windows is losing market shares due to Linux. See why Microsoft want to have TCPA now? General Discussion? Are you kidding me? Just read all the p00p Gates is saying! Do you still think it should go to General? Of course being the richest company in the world this is unacceptable. Let's invent TCPA and stop Linux altogether. Since only applications signed by microsoft can be installed. See why Microsoft want to have TCPA now? ![]() But let's remember this. The dvd encoding was supposed to be impossible to hack. It was hacked before it was released. Sorry about bringing in TCPA but it's another utterly stupid idea by the "great financial genius" Bill Gates. Also remember that if Gates where to pay for all the damage his software caused prior to the first day of year 2000. All the os that had to be upgraded. Everyone was scared this was the ending of the world (Bowling for columbine). If Gates where to pay for that fuzz. I do so try not to get up on my Linux soapbox any more often than necessary. But computer security discussions do come up on these forums, and some things just need to be said. The biggest thing I get out of Gates' comments is that he's in trouble. He's losing market share to Linux, and this is where a guy who's not in big trouble says, "Hey, we've got a serious problem here. What can we do to make Windows secure?" Gates, on the other hand is saying there's no problem. He's so out of touch it would be comical if the world didn't spend billions of dollars per year on Windows security problems. I think it was Einstein who defined insanity as continuing to do the same thing that you've always done and expecting to get a different result than the result you've always gotten. Gates is insane. He has actually said that he's going to keep doing what he has always done because he doesn't think there's any problem, and he expects the result to be different from the result he's always gotten: A new discovery almost every week of a serious security issue. The biggest security problem with Linux and other secure systems is the user. Think of a block of houses on a street where a hard-to-catch burglar prowls on a regular basis. Some houses have heavy-duty deadbolt locks and secure windows. Those are the Linux houses. Others have crappy locks, and the windows are easy to pry open. Those are the Microsoft houses. But some of the people living in the Linux houses are careless with their keys, It's not convenient to lock the deadbolt all the time, nor to unlock it whenever they come home. And they worry about losing their keys. So some of them keep a spare key under the doormat or on top of the door frame--the first places any self-respecting burglar (if there's such a thing) will look. Sometimes they don't lock the door at all--"I'm just going down to the corner grocery for five minutes. I'll be right back." These are the people who log in as root all the time, pick easy-to-guess passwords and install untrusted software from the root account. That fancy deadbolt lock doesn't work if you don't lock it or if the burglar can easily get the key, but it's the choice of the person living in the house. The people living in the Microsoft houses, on the other hand, have the burglar coming right in through the windows no matter what they do. _______________ My signature is only one line.
