I live in Texas.

...for those of you unfamiliar with American geography, Texas is smack dab in the middle of an area of the country called "Tornado Alley". It a strip that runs right through the middle of the country. It also has some of the most ideal conditions for the creation of Tornados, and huge friggin storms.

I live in the middle of this.

:(

In any case, when I saw this friggin HUGE storm coming, one that had already sprouted a twister or two, what do I do? I play it safe and turn off all electronics in the house. As a secondary precaution, I also unplugged my computer/computer accessories (printer/scanner, modem, speakers, moniter, etc.) from the wall outlet.

As soon as the weather dies down and random crap is no longer flying through the air, I decide to go out. Its great, still cloudy, kinda humid, but not very cold, so I enjoy myself. Then I came home...

I looked and it appeared that the worst had passed. I then plugged my computer back in, booted it up, and stared as my cable modem was completely unresponsive.

Turns out, I had an electrical surge go through my coaxial cable. Which was alomst completely unheard of.

So now I am sitting here, using a loaner, trying to find another modem for relatively cheap, preferably a Motorola. :D

edit:// Here ars some snaps I took out of meh front door, this is with a 2.1 Megapixil so no, thats not bad quality, its just rain. :P

Check it out!

I've seen 12 twisters within a 120 mile radius... does that count for something?....

(K)atan, your right, but tell me, have you ever had seven twisters around your city in the same 60-mile radius? ;)

When I lived in Tulsa in 1990, I had a 1200 baud modem (haha, it was for my Apple IIe clone) go out from a surge through the phone line during an electrical storm. They make surge protectors for coaxial as well as phone lines. They are a good investment, especially in your neck of the woods.

Yeah, usually whenever a storm is a comin', I unplug all my important stuff, and then go and warm up my generator out in my back shed, just incase we lose power.

eeeeep

that happens here quite often. if u unplug ur TV or receiver or vcr or telephone or whatever thats grounded, you gotta totally unplug it. not just the power line.

and damage like this is usually uninsuranced. :(

Luckily, here in NY we don't get much in the way of tornadoes. We usually get about 1 hurricane per year, though sometimes by the time they get here, they've died down quite a bit. It doesn't effect most of NY State, just us here on the coast.

I hope you get up and running soon!

Coaxial cable is the cable that runs from your cable thing in your wall to your TV and cablemodem. :)
