ROFL!!! and the comments make it all worthwhile. Just so you all know: IT IS A JOKE. Clicking on some of the links in the article (EDIT: and reading JavaGuy's post early on) will prove that.

And Microserfs and Neuromancer were both really good books! Let alone Programming in Perl... :D

If your son has requested a new "processor" from a company called "AMD", this is genuine cause for alarm. AMD is a third-world based company who make inferior, "knock-off" copies of American processor chips. They use child labor extensively in their third world sweatshops, and they deliberately disable the security features that American processor makers, such as Intel, use to prevent hacking. AMD chips are never sold in stores, and you will most likely be told that you have to order them from internet sites. Do not buy this chip! This is one request that you must refuse your son, if you are to have any hope of raising him well.
Yeah sure... Everyone who is able to compete with american companies is from the third world. If I didn't know this was a satire I would have laughed to death. :D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D

Guys, this is satire.

Unfortunately, like much good satire, it's pretty close to the mark. There really are people who think like the fictitious father who supposedly wrote the article.

"Has your child asked for new hardware?...They may request "faster" video cards..."

Oh yeah, boosting my frames-per-second and making my fog/lighting effects more realistic is going to be a lot of help hacking into the Pentagon's network. Or at least own on Siege.

"Does your child read hacking manuals?"

Note that none of the books he specifically mentions as "hacking manuals" are manuals at all. Three of them are works of fiction! And Programming with Perl? This is like saying your son is running a chop shop if he knows how to replace a starter motor.

"Does your son use Quake?...Quake is an online virtual reality used by hackers....If your son is using Quake, you should make hime understand that this is not acceptable to you. You should ensure all the firearms in your house are carefully locked away, and have trigger locks installed. You should also bring your concerns to the attention of his school."

But here's my favorite part:

"Is your son becoming argumentative and surly in his social behaviour?"

This is actually the funniest part of the article, but the author doesn't beat us over the head with it. Imagine the dynamic between this fictional father and his son: The father is obviously a raving lunatic, a guy who wears a tin-foil beanie to protect himself from mind-control rays. The son, being a techie and a fan of Linux seems to be able, unlike his father, to figure out how things work in the real world. Now imagine the kind of exchanges that would occur between them. "Argumentative and surly" indeed!

Is your son obsessed with "Lunix"?

BSD, Lunix, Debian and Mandrake are all versions of an illegal hacker operation system, invented by a Soviet computer hacker named Linyos Torovoltos, before the Russians lost the Cold War. It is based on a program called "xenix", which was written by Microsoft for the US government. These programs are used by hackers to break into other people's computer systems to steal credit card numbers. They may also be used to break into people's stereos to steal their music, using the "mp3" program. Torovoltos is a notorious hacker, responsible for writing many hacker programs, such as "telnet", which is used by hackers to connect to machines on the internet without using a telephone."

"Lunix?" A play on "lunatic?"

:D

I'm posting this from a Mandrake machine. I'll be hacking into your stereo using my mp3 program shortly.

that's not exactly what I was expecting as a reply, but yeah I agree with you Bail.

Being a hacker doesn't mean you're evil and wanna hack everyone's PC and destroy all the data you see. Being a hacker can be good in reasons like what Bail said... I could go on talking for hours but I must get back to IRC where I'm supposed to having a conversation :P :D

oh please!
he's kiddin', right?

Sure, hacking is wrong
but they can do nice stuff too
like showing weaknesses in programs
so, they're not all bad.

Being dissapointed in your son for something that happened on the internet is a bit... erm... queer.
