Ping, Lag, and ISP

Earlier today when I logged on to one of the Kansas servers, non-class, I had a ping of 68, now I am getting a ping of over 300. Please Help. Also I keep getting a message saying I have a connection interuption. I assume it has something to do with my ISP. I am running a cable modem and have nothing else open. I am using xp and have a fast processor and good graphics card. Again Please Help. Thanks :(

Ok. Some things might need to be clarified here.

'Ping' measures the time it takes for a 'packet' to go from your computer to the target machine and back (it works like sonar, hence the name).

Packetloss is what you get when you get 'Connection interrupted' for a couple of seconds and then all the sudden you can move again. This isn't lag, but is often called that anyways ('lag' is synonymous to 'ping' originally, but used in a negative way, instead to explain 'high ping reply time', as in "I've got bad lag";). It is caused by a short period of fuckup at any of the machines along the way. A packet gets sent out, but doesn't arrive to it's designated target computer.

There are means to investigate this in JK2. Use the command '\set cg_lagometer 1' (or cg_drawlagometer, I'm not sure) in console to bring up a small box where you can see how your ping changes. The blue line represents outgoing packets, and the green line represents incoming packets. In case of high ping, the green line grows thicker. When you get packetloss, it goes yellow.

As for graphicscards:
The only time a poor graphics card CAN cause higher pings, is if both network and graphic card connects to an ISA-port. They hog cpu-power instead of streaming data and were common about the time jesus walked the earth, so you shouldn't be too worried about that.

One thing that might be wrong is the 'rate' setting. You can check this by pulling down the console and type '\rate'. This shows a timerelative value of how many packets your computer should try to send to the server. The faster the connection, the higher the value. It ranges from 4000 (dialup modem) to 25000 (T3 line).

Cheers

It is comcast cable and after dealing with three seperate linksys techs the problem seems to be solved. I had to change some filters, clone the MAC address and stupid I didn't think of it, upgrade the firmware. Now it seems that I am not getting the interuptions, but only time will tell. Thanks everybody for your help. See ya around

My router has a built-in firewall, but I haven't had any problems, just when my ISP is being a real b!tch. They acknowledged a problem in my area so it isn't any of my equipment.
As far as the g-card causing higher pings, I'm not so sure about that. I could definitely see it affecting fps, which might look like you're lagging, but I don't think it makes that much difference to your actual ping.

well 2 things. 1 is that ur graphics card can add lag.if ur gcard is really dad(just makin the cut) then it can add around 20 ping but thats it. also i found that some routers do some messed up thingy and block some stuff that shouldnt be blocked. this happens only if u have a router with a built in fwall

Alirght just a quick question...that ISP you have with the Cable...is it AT&T? :P I have them and man did they suck back in Oct Nov. Nofrikinfun can vouch for me ;) Mainly the reason your ping would get higher is if you're trying to play at a "peak time" when all the other people in your area are on too. I have cable...and while it has gotten much better, I'd still go with DSL if it was in my area. I have a linksys cable modem with an 8port hub/router. But I only use the hub on rare occasions. Usually its just modem straight to computer :D

I use a simple hub, never have to F*** with configuring it. Never have that problem. 4 ports.

I use a 4 port router as well with no problems (except when my ISP "decides" to screw with my connection.

I play online all the time through a 4-port router and when I had a class on the KC class server my ping was around 100. IT IS NOT THE ROUTER. Having said that, if the router has a lot of options that get misconfigured, it CAN affect the connection. It depends on your router.

thanks a lot guys I called my isp last night to complain and they ran a series of tests and the woman noticed that while she was runing a continuous ping that i kept timing out so they are sending someone out to my place to look at it today, whether this will solve anything I don't know, but at least i am seeing some of teh service for what that huge bill is supposed to pay for.

See you all around.

Having worked at an ISP for a few years calling them up and saying you're having crappy ping times to your games will get you a speech about how that isn't a priority and to check with the game server admins. Be warned.. I mean if they try to help you out that's cool, but if you get put on hold for a while while they try to fix ppl who can't get email or dial in don't be suprised. :)

Make sure you have all other programs turned off, especially any servers you may be running or p2p programs like WinMX or Kazaa or whatever.

I'd call up your ISP and complain. Who knows, maybe they'll give you a month for free (worked for me). Your video card, processor, etc. really won't make any difference to your ping rate.
