Continueing the recently established trend to discuss ethical/moral/philosophical issues:

What is the meaning of life?

Furthermore:
Why are you on this planet?

Important: For the sake of easy reading, try to keep your views short and centered please. :)

ok. Here it goes.

God creates everyone with a purpose, and a job, but still gives them the choice wether or not to accept it. Though, knowing what choice they will make, he incoorperates it into his plan (but that's something else).

I am not sure of my purpose, but everyone in my family, and people in my church say I have the potential to do something great. I didn't think much of it, untill I met another Christian, who never knew me. He looked into my eyes, and said: "You are going to do something great one day". So, I don't know my purpose to life, but for now, I'm here to figure it out.

Sorry for making a semi-long post, but I couldn't seem to find a short way to explain.:D

More Nerdy stuff, thats somewhat related.

There is a theory which states that if ever anyone discovers exactly what the universe is for and why it is here, it will instantly be replaced by somethig even more bizarre and inexplicable...

There is another that states this has already happened.

Anyway, I heard this a while back from someone, and took after it. The meaning of life is to waste your time trying to define the meaning of life, and you finally realize it right before you die.

The best explaination of "Why are we here?" that I saw was from the movie Dogma, at the very end.

The main character (I forget her name) asks God (played by Alanis Morrisette), "Why are we here?"
God thinks for a second and just honks her nose.

The purpose of life is to discover your gift, the meaning of life is to give it away.

Someone on my MSN list has that. I agree. Why are we on this planet? Because we were born here. Are we the only organisms in the universe? Definately not. can i prove it? Nope, but you can't prove otherwise

Edit: about satisfaction, i guess in the quote above 'your gift' or giving away your gift causes satisfaction in the long run. I mean, if your gift happens to be caring and patience, then, being caring to others, and being patient in helping them/yourself, thats satisfying. I mean, if one of your friends has some troubles (problems i guess), and you help them, thats a satisfying feeling, well, for me anyway

I think the meaning of life should be discussed after some wine and cheese in a semi-dark living room with cosy chairs. For me, it's too big to think about it because there a so many aspects to consider. On the short notice, I think life is about settings goals, and working hard to achieve them and then be happy and set a new goal.

A purpose is nice, and I don't like 'to reproduce' or 'to live'. To 'reproduce' not that hard and I live already and to have 'living' as my goal in life, would be very complicated, because it's not something you try to achieve, but try to maintain and that is in my opinion alot more boring.

As you can see I really need wine, cheese and a cosy chair to discuss this :P

yeah I think I do. I spend a lot of time on my running, which gives me a lot of satisfaction and joy :). But what I think you mean is that you can spend a lot of time on something that will only get you joy/satisfaction after a few years, ie college. Thats why I think my school goes first on almost everything, especially before the JA. ;)

A very positive way to live Exar ;) Very epicuric
But there are a lot of things in life that are not directly causing joy, but maybe on the long term something else wich i deem very important:
satisfaction

does anyone get me here?

The meaning of life? To eat cheese and be happy!

Why am I here? See above. :D

Okay, but really, I heard it best described to me just yesterday by a friend when he said that, "God cut off his hand so that he could shake it." Meaning, that He is my creator, and I am here because quite frankly, he wants to have a good time with me, and me with him. The whold hand thing, thats free will, something that still amazes me.

From several years of questioning and searching, I have found this to be Veritas, truth.

....and to be quite honest, it actually makes things a lot more interesting than not having something greater to live for, wouldn't ya think? :)
