Just installed Mandrake 10, dang fine distribution as far I've seen so far. I have a working cable modem, video, and sound without having to screw around. Very nice! First distro I ever installed where everything worked right away!

Aww what's the fun in a linux distro if you dont have to mess with stuff to get it working? That's all part of the mystique!

erm
first of all, I had that error for ages, and everything works fine :)
partitionmagic isnt the best program out there.

second thing: if u plan to cross use Linux and Win32 (which i've been doign for years now), you will find out that NTFS write access is the only risky thing.

Gnome 2.6 is not available, yep, but the 2.5.90 release looks pretty damn good, and the final 2.6 is due in 1-2 weeks :)

so meanwhile check Footnotes and keep ur fingers crossed :)

oh edit:
the cd check of many many games doesnt work because the programs use a direct way of accessing the CDrom drive, and that just dont work in linux.
so u'll need a no-cd patch, no doubt.
btw JK2 just worked fine on my box even with the normal WINE.

for an overview check the Wine appdb

I call winding up with a messed up partition table and a "working" computer luck beyond all luck. Two drives would be OK, but I have one drive and was just experimenting with Linux.

Anyways, this just gave me the reason I needed to wipe everything clean and start from scratch. I wanted to remove the FAT32 partitions and go with larger NTFS volumes anyways. I had the FAT32 on there so I could dual boot to Windows 98 and have all my drives visible to Win 98 some time ago. I have several old games I still love to play that only work on Win 98. Linux will just have to wait until I upgrade this box with new hardware some time in the future.

When I've upgraded all my stuff in my case - I'm gunna be making another PC out of all the old bits - which will be great, as I can run Linux on it - and when I get broadband (not soon by the looks of it - crappy coverage), I'd use it as a dedicated server.

I wouldn't call it "risky." I did it for a brief period, but then I decided it was a waste of a hard drive to have a Windows drive on there. Now I just keep my MP3s on the extra drive. The best solution for me was to dump Windows entirely. Windows was too risky for me.

I have a much better idea. Don't install Linux at all :) I was just messing around with Linux, there's no real need for me to have it except to feed my mind. Maybe sometime in the future I'll buy another computer that can be Linux dedicated. Having the two coexist is risky business.

My suggestion is that Windows be on a completely separate drive, not just another partition of the same drive.

Another thing: If you access your Windows file system from Linux, read, don't write! Writing to the drive may not hurt anything, but it's a risky move.

Well I thought the computer was fine until I tried running Partition Magic. P. Magic won't even start because of Error 110 (Partition Table error.) The recommended course of action by Powerquest is this:

To correct Error #110, you should back up all data on the disk (or what data can still be accessed), delete all the partitions, and recreate the partitions using the computer, controller, and BIOS settings that you intend to use.

LUCKY me :(

If you looking for me, I'll be reinstalling everything from scratch, so you won't be finding me LOL.

The Moral:

NEVER use the Mandrake partitioning tools during installation when you plan on running multiple op sys with one of them being Windows. Use Partition Magic instead.

I make my living programming in a Windows environment, though our applications deploy on Unix boxes. It's Java, which does not require Windows, but the desktops we all use are Winblows boxes, and I have to use the environment and toolset my employer specifies. I do not have a single Windows machine in my home. I am encouraged by the fact more and more businesses are making the Linux leap.

But yeah, if you make your living doing C and/or C++ coding (or whatever) for Windows, then you probably do need a Windows machine at home to keep your skills sharp.

I tried that WineX, it was an older version, something like 3.0. Games launched and video ran fine but sounds were crackled.

I first tried Linux on my last computer which had a Tyan Tomcat motherboard. For some reason the AGP wouldn't work right, so most everything ran slow (games, not apps.) I ran into the problem with Debian, Red Hat and Mandrake. This new motherboard I have is from Asus and works great with Linux. The games I ran through Winex, ran very well except that sound problem.

I didn't try JK3, but tried to get JK2 running through Winex, but it wouldn't find the CD. I got to the menu with load/profile/setup etc.. but when I tried loading a game, it told me it couldn't find the CD that was in the drive. I tried unmounting and mounting, but no luck. Maybe the new version of Winex works with JK2 better or *gasp* I would need a crack.

I know you guys love Linux, but I could never make a Linux-only leap. The reason for it, is I'm a Windows programmer for a living. I administrate and program our SQL Server as well. I need Windows to keep my programming skills up to date. Our Company uses AutoCAD, which prevents any kind of migration to Linux at work beyond file servers. The clients have to be Windows. Windows in the past had a bad reputation, but Windows 2000/XP makes using Windows a much nicer experience.

I dont beleive gnome 2.6 is available yet, you can 2.5 ( the development version of what 2.6 will be) at the gnome site.

openoffice is neat for a little word processing now and there, but for bigger (100 pages+) documents its just a nightmare.
LaTeX all the way.

well I thought of upgrading to Mandrake 10 as well, but I guess I'll wait until the final release is out. I hope it uses gnome 2.6. soo looking forward to that. :D

Its hard to beleive this is the 1st distro you have ever installed w/o troubles, in my OS experimentation phase, I installed:

NetBSD - Desktop
FreeBSD - Desktop
OpenBSD - NAT box
Redhat - Desktop
Suse - Desktop
Slackware - Desktop
FreeBSD - Laptop

All trouble free.

I know JavaGuy uses WineX (by transgamming) and have know many other who do also, has anyone had any luck running gamin under another version of wine?

Also ( im sure more people know about this ), but OpenOffice is an excellent program written by Sun, it available for almost every *nix that I can think of and I have installed on my Winblows box. It has full compatability with Microsoft Office Word, Excel, and Powerpoint. There is also a Program like microsoft Project but it is not yet compatible with microsoft project. Its cool, its free, and I have tested it with Word, PPT, and Excel files created in Office 97, 2000, and XP.

There's just one reason I gotta still have WinXP installed :( I hate the linux keyboard layout switcher cuz it gives me many other side effects, so I gotta type in Greek SOMEWHERE and that's WinXP... :(

Its the free version (Mandrake 10 Community Edition) and I spoke a little prematurely. Linux is working perfectly on this box, but when I select Windows in LILO, I get the dreaded "NTLDR is missing" error. So, I'm stuck with Linux until I get that fixed so no Jedi for me until I do :(

Got any advice on how to fix this? I was just about to hit Google for the answer.

Hit Google, found that I needed to sys c: the drive and use fixboot. Worked like a charm with both systems XP and Mandrake up and running perfectly w00t!

The free version?

Did you upgrade or do a clean installation?
