Dumbing down Shakespeare

This goes in Crazy Stuff because everything to do with American public schools ("We put the 'C' in Quality!";) is crazy.

http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,114078,00.html

For students who are "on track to attend college" but "have poor reading skills." In a decent school system, a student with poor reading skills could not enter high school, much less graduate.

Here in America, we have this idea that everybody should get a college degree, even those who have no business being in an academic environment. So we've dumbed down colleges to where people with poor reading skills can actually attend...and graduate!

The rationale for sending everyone to college was that people with degrees made more money than people without them. So we've dumbed down curricula to the point that a college degree today is worth less than the 8th grade certificate my grandfather earned before going out into the world and starting his own business. The problem is that the advantages conferred by a college education come from what the kids learn, not from the piece of paper. Gutting the academic content so that everyone can get the piece of paper not only does not confer those advantages on everyone, it takes them away from the few who would have had them.

Sorry but i think your logic might be a bit biased. Sure 4 years of math(s) and science would prolly put you in a good position but i think the point of school should be EXPERIENCE over grades. I dropped maths in year 11, screwed up chemistry (learnt the 2 year course 2 days before final exam and passed). I LEARNT that a) i didnt want to do those subjects therefore b) i dont want a job relating to those subjects. Q. How many people wind up in jobs they dont like? A. a lot. I dont know many people who dont complain about their jobs in some regard. Me, im a firm believer in the phrase that if you like what you do you dont work a day in your life - so i got rid of the entire science and maths perspective entirely when i went to Uni (college for you American types) and now i study Humanities (which i like) and have been offered a Masters/Honourship. I wont tell you where I 'work' because I'm not allowed but i like it. I reckon that if thats all someone takes out of their education its worthwhile. Noone should be denied education - if for no other reason its against the UN declaration of human rights.

Yeah, this is to help students get "into" college. The article even says, maybe they will attend some classes, but it doesn't mean the will graduate.

Also, while the public school system does have some problems, it basic is a, "you get out, what you put in," system.

You wanna take basic english all 4 years of high school, start at the lowest level math class, take physical education all 4 years, feel free, I know right where your headed.

Or do you want to do some freaking work, actually take 4 years of math AND science.

Now excuse me, I am going to talk to my professor, teaching CIS 310 (Assembly Language) I think Assembly language is to hard to read, maybe he can dumb it down for us......................

Speaking from a Canadian point of view, the general opinion up here in the chilly (and quite rainy) North is that South Korea is the 51st state, Mexico is the 52nd, and we own j00 at baseball, which Americans invented anyway. :D

Also, Shakespeare was born in Stratford, Ontario. :P

I used the Cliff Notes to do my book report on MacBeth.

Seriously, the puplic education system here in the US is atrocious. So many people can't even spell or form a proper sentence. A lot of Americans think that Canada and Mexico are States for cryin' out loud! They also don't know where other foriegn countries are unless we bomb them or something.

Ridiculous!!!

Shakespear isnt really that hard to read. This is coming from a 13 year old 8th grader. If a high schooler has to have a simplified version, he/she shouldnt be allowed to go to college. Its not that hard, stop skateboarding or turn off the comp for 30 minutes to study each day, its not that hard!

Well said JavaGuy!

That is why I didn't go to college in the states. Everyone's telling me "why don't you come to the states? they got a better education if you ask me."

Better education?? It should be more like "why don't you come to the states? pay 40000 bucks a year and get a mediocre education that is worth no more than the name of the university you graduate from?"

thanks, but no thanks.
