yeah, Ovidus. :)

well, greek and roman history are quite similiar, but the romans were too decadent in the end.
another classic quote:

Halendor, the Greeks might have provided the base for our cultural heritage, the Romans at least had a sense of humour ;)

Fizze, Ovidius right?

I'm very interested in the Roman Games and stuff and am watching "The Colesseum" tonight, about a guy that goes from a slave, to a great gladiator, so I just wanted to learn some things about Rome before I watched the movie. If you want you can keep the info. coming in, it's very interesting. :)

Agreed. Check out John Allen Paulos' A History of Pi for some no-holds-barred commentary on the Roman Empire (and later in the book, the Soviet Empire).

But a lot of interesting things happened during Rome's long history. A separate Greek thread would be cool. I actually studied classical Greek for a couple terms in college.

Check out The Roman Record. Your library probably has it or can get it via inter-library loan. I have my own copy.

If you ever turn on C-SPAN and think, "My Gawd, watching Congress in session is indistinguishable from watching Jerry Springer, pick up The Annals of Imperial Rome by Tacitus. He gives first-hand accounts of the Senate in session that should dispell any doubt that human nature is the same in all times and places. Nothing has changed.

If you really want to learn some roman history read some of Plutarch's work especially the Makers of Rome and the Fall of the Roman Empire. My favorites so far are Fabious Maximus and Marcellus and their on going battles with Hannibal. Its all a good read.

I love Cicero!

There is an awfull lot to tell about the Romans, I learn a lot about their language and culture since i attend a gymnasium.

Two of my favourite quotes:

Caccatum non est pictum

Shat isn't painted

Hadrianus' architect Appolodorus to the young man Traianus when he critized his drawings:
Abe et cuncurbita dessine!
Go, and draw pumpkins!

When Traianus became emperor poor old Appolodorus lost his job.

A quote I like:

"Inter enim arma silent leges." - Cicero

(In times of war, the laws fall silent)

Marcus Tullius Cicero was born in 106 B.C., six years before the birth of Julius Caesar, into a wealthy family, though none of his family served as senators. He received the Roman equivalent of an Ivy League education, studying rhetoric and philosophy in Rome, Athens, and Rhodes. After making a name as a lawyer in the Roman lawcourts, he was elected to the office of quaestor in 76, which made him a member of the Senate, and in 63 he was elected consul, 1 at the lowest legal age and as the first man for thirty years to gain that position from a family which had not previously held the office.

During his year as consul he put down the conspiracy of Catiline, for which he was awarded the title of "Father of his Country." Cicero, however, as a champion of the traditional institutions of the Roman republic and the enemy of autocracy, was no match for the power politics of Julius Caesar and Pompey, and was never afterwards a major influence in public affairs when they erupted onto the scene. Cicero rejoiced at the assassination of Julius Caesar in 44 B.C. and returned to political life with vigorous public attacks on Mark Antony, but his association with the young Octavian (later the Emperor Augustus) did not save him from Antony's revenge and he was killed in the wave of assassinations which began the triumvirate regime of Octavian, Antony, and Lepidus (43 B.C.)

Okay, here's my favorite Roman quote:

"Oderint Dum Metuant." --Lucius Accius (170 BC - 86 BC)

It means, more or less, "Let them hate, so long as they fear," a truly badass quote and very practical for anyone who has to deal with people who hate.
