Every once in a while I get one of those "amazing facts" e-mails that make the rounds from time to time. The "facts" listed in these e-mails never cite any source, and an interesting exercise is to find out if they are actually true. My experience has been that the overwhelming majority of them are urban legends, e.g. "A duck's quack does not echo." (The Straight Dope analyzed this one to death, and a duck's quack most certainly does echo.) A favorite of mine is that a baby has no kneecaps. This isn't true, but it does have a grain of truth to it. A newborn's kneecaps are not ossified and so don't show up on X-rays very well. _______________ My signature is only one line.
