Ok I'm super late in posting this since its like 3 am and this all happened at 12:30pm in the afternoon but I was too lazy to post this then. As some of you may already know if you were in IRC earlier today or if you watch the news, Richmond Virginia caught on fire again today. I say again because Richmond was once burnt to the gound during the civil war by Union troops. Since I live in Richmond I got a front row seat to it all. The building that first caught fire was a new dorm that Virginia Commonwealth University (my school) was building. I happen to live only a block away from this building. Its always wierd when you bust out of your apartment becuase you are late for class and you are greated by a giant fire ball. Yeah I'll admit it was cool. The uncool part was that the street this was all taking place on is considered the life vain to my city. So for this street to be blocked off all hell was breaking loose. Traffic was going in all directions. People were all out on the streets in mob fashion. Helicopters flying all over the place. It was pretty awesome in an exciting kind of way. Well eventually everyone thought that the fire was coming under control. That of course was until like 5 other buildings caught fire. Pretty soon over a dozen buildings and homes had caught fire primarily becuase they are old buildings that still have tar roofs. Hell, even a fire truck caught fire. That of course was priceless. So after about 3 hours things finally got under control. I left the city when things got better and went to my parents house. My only regret is that I didnt take any pictures. I really think that god must hate Richmond Virginia. The city already has a very worn and beaten down feel to it. It just has this stench of failure to it. If that wasnt enough it has had three natural disasters in a span of 6 months. First it was Hurricane Isabelle, then an earthquake that was 4.5 on the richter scale (sounds weak but it dameged some buildings) and finally he opened the bowels of hell a block away from my apartment. i try to look at this in a light hearted way. mainly because..... 1. no one was hurt. there was one case of smoke inhalation but that guy was probably a wuss or something 2. it was mainly buildings owned by my school that were damaged and insurance covers that. i do feel bad for the homes that were burned but most of those were crack houses so my sympathy can only stretch so far. 3. it was fun. everyone and their mamma was outside watching. i got to mingle with the crowd and watch stuff blow up in a safe surrounding. thats good ol fun in my book. ok, to see something burn down that is close to you is no fun, believe me. I happen to know I hope no one got hurt in this fire?
