Quote: I think it has some sort of "standby" mode where it turns on as soon as you hit the button Actually, that's another thing; Jedis' sabers turn off automatically when they get killed (see Qui-Gon or Obi Wan's death), yet I hardly think that the greatest thing on your mind when in your death throes is turning off your saber... My point is, they must be in some way tied (through the force?) to their masters so that they turn off when the master dies. _______________ "There is no emotion... there is peace. As far as the Episode I thing, Qui-Gon mentions that if you turn off the lightsaber's power source beforehand, water doesn't affect it. I think it has some sort of "standby" mode where it turns on as soon as you hit the button, and then a full-off mode for recharging, where it won't turn on by accident. _______________ Saving the world, one kilobyte at a time. |

In Ep. I, Qui-Gon/Obi Wan swim through water with sabres on their hilts and it does them no harm... Which begs the question: why don't sabres rust? Are they covered by an aluminium oxide coating - or is there some special metal that doesn't corrode available only in the SW galaxy? _______________ "There is no emotion... there is peace. well the blade is made of plasma, and so if the field was disrupted, then out comes the plasma, and ok maybe no explosion, but definatly no more jedi ![]() |

Disruption of a magnetic field does not automatically lead to an explosion - although it depends what you mean by 'disruption'. _______________ Saving the world, one kilobyte at a time. |

i don't think lightsabers use magnetic fields to contain the balde, because firstly, if that were true, when 2 sabers clash, wouldn't the magnetic fields be distupted by on another, causing the saber to blow up? and second of all, to defeat a jedi all u would have to do is throw a magnet at him and it will disrupt the field and blow him up.... right? i think... |

magnetic materials obviously exist. Its blatantly clear when Threepio and Artoo are picked up in ROTJ. also if you read the novels 'durasteel' is a very common building material there. Most of the glass in Star Wars is also called 'Transparisteel. Its a transparent derivative of steel, obviously stronger than glass. And don't say "that's not possibly" because: 1. Its a fantasy world and if they can think it up then its quite possible there. And 2. There is a secondary Sci-Fi precedent for transparent metal forms from Star Trek. In Star Trek IV, Scotty shows a factory on earth how to create transparent aluminum for use in transporting the whales back to the future. _______________ When you are going through Hell, keep going. -Sir Winston Churchill. I don't find it plausible that iron and steel do not exist in the SW universe. And aluminum is not strong enough to build the stuff they have in SW. I can believe that they also have much stronger synthetic materials, but I don't buy that ferrous (sp?) metals aren't around. They are way too common in the universe. A lot of the stuff on Tatooine, for example, looked like it was made of iron or steel and had the telltale signs of reddish-brown rust, like the sandcrawler. That says iron/steel to me. So yeah, that's a pretty good point about the blade drawing every metal thing to it. The magnetic containment field would have to be monstrously strong too. _______________ My signature is only one line. You're welcome. |
