TROY: Homer says "D'OH!"

thought i'd save a few souls from wasting their hard earned cash on this pile of hollywood waste.

how does something like this get made after they can make perfectly reasonalbe movies like Gladiator or Braveheart. while i don't consider either one of those movies cinematic masterpieces, they are quite fun and enjoyable movies.

i think some morons in hollywood thought, "hey, Lord of the Rings did so good, lets have orland bloom shoot a bow again!" the acting is horrid, the director seems to have cut his teeth on soap operas, the editing is awkward, the sound is horribly wrong in places, and....well you get the point. there are a few cool fight scenes, but not woth $6 or more. only see this movie if you don't mind wasting 2 hours for the few minutes that are good, oh and only if you get to see it for free, or maybe less than $2. 1 dollar for each cool fight.

yes, i'm being a bit harsh on it...but it does really really suck after seeing that hollywood can make something worth a darn like LOTR.

/rant :D

It sucked in the beginning but got much better in the end. Also Pitt couldn't handle the demanding role of Achilles. + There was a whole lot of things that didn't fit with the Illiad.

In Homer weren't they kind of like Ernie and Bert? It wasn't stated explicitly, but you just knew...

They weren't cousins in fact, the guy who wrote the script said himself he made it cousins except for male lovers because otherwise the movie would sell less.

Except? You mean instead right?

That's true, but true democracy is an impossible way to govern a country. There are however certain 'grades' in democracy. And I think most Northern European countries are more democratic than the US.

At the risk of moving away from the point of this post i would say that there's no such thing as 'true' democracy world-wide - if you want me to back that up wth a coherent argument you'll have to wait until tomorrow -> wine doesn't do much for my reasoning skills ;)

The US claims to be a democratic republic. A country can be a republic, or a monarchy. And the republic or monarchy can be governed democratically, or like a dictatorship etc.
But one could argue about how democratic the US political system really is.

Well, the thing about mythology is that there wasn't usually just one version of a story. The myths changed over the course of many, many years and depending on the location in which you lived. Most of the myths were passed down orally before they were ever written down, anyway, so there are bound to be many variations of the same story.

according to what i've heard achilles and petroculs(sp?) were cousins. They are protraid as such in the movie, and though the homosexual stuff isn't shown it wouldn't suprise me. Also, about acting, orlando bloom didn't do a very good job in this movie either. I thought there was some bad casting, and generally just not the best actors, but it was good non-the less

Indeed, given that homosexuality was a common practice in much of ancient Greece, it seems almost likely.
And the Greece was definitely a better democracy, since the US is not really a democracy at all, but a republic! :P

$6 for a movie!?!?!?

Try like $10.50 here, and that doesn't include popcorn or soda!

Anyway, I haven't seen it, and I probably won't until it comes to the local Blockbuster. Especially at $10.50!

Yeah, I don't think Patroculus was his cousin at all. He was just his best friend, and some people think, his lover. Anyway, I like the Odyssey much better, because it has a hero that I [i]like[/].

My recollection is that it was Paris who shot Achilles with a poisoned arrow in the heel guided by Apollo. Apollo was furious that Achilles defiled his temple by ransacking it and beheading a foe inside.

In some versions of the story, Petroclus was Achilles tutor and male lover. So, I guess the flaming homosexual look fits him. :D

Achilles was not slain by Hektor, Hektor was slain by Achilles, who dragged his body several times around the city in revenge of the death of his beloved Patroklos.
I believe it was Paris himself, who shot an arrow (guided by the gods) in Achilles' heel.

By the way, why would one say Illiad when it sais Illias, and Homer when it clearly says Homeros?

Yes, the fact that LotR wasn't made in Hollywood is one of the reasons it's good :D

Jedi Flyer,
No, the reason it was his heel is that his mother, Thetis, dipped him in the river Styx as an infant. There are other versions of the story, but that's the most popular and, if memory serves, the one Homer accepts. Achilles was, in fact, supernaturally invincible, not merely tough. His heel was vulnerable because that was where she held him.

Moridin's version of the "real" Trojan war jibes with my own recollection. It was some kind of trade war.

I don't recall it being a poison arrow. What I do remember from Homer is Hector confronting Achilles on the field and saying, "Let us not be niggardly with our spears." So I thought it was a spear. In any case, Achilles would have done well to wear a gigantic iron boot on that one foot.

Oh, and Steinin requested no spoilers, so nobody tell him what's inside the horse!

I've very recently heard the entire Illiad story and I doubt this Hollywood production can cover all the details. All the gods can't possibly be represented in a single movie. And Hollywood makes all the Greek heroes stand out like saints. I'm still going to watch this movie however. Me and my gang is seeing it on Friday so no spoilers please.

first off...the reason it was his ankle is achilles was a son of a god or goddess...he wasn't immortal, but he was really freakin hard to kill.
secondly, i thought the movie was really really good. I would gladly pay to go see it again. Granted the person playing hector was a SHITTY actor, and achilles's cousin looked like a flamming homosexual...but other then that it was a pretty good movie

Java Guy- I always thought that it was a poison arrow? And that was why he died so quickly.

But about the war actually happeneing, I'm pretty sure most historians believe that it did. Of course, it's not over a woman, and there weren't any gods messing about. Actually, no one thought that the city of Troy even existed- until archeologists found the ruins. Now, the general conjecture is that Troy (Illium) controlled the Dardanells, (i think I spelled that incorrectly)which was a route to the East, into the Mediterranean Sea. Greece wanted the trade route, so they fought over it. Anyway, that's what I've been told, it may be totally different.

i really liked this film until the end. it had great build up but then a craptastic ending. still, i enjoyed it till the city got sacked. its worth seeing if you know nothing of troy. just try not to use what happens in the movie as awnsers on a test.
