So, im tired of working shit jobs, where I get bitched at if I punch in at 9:00:02 instead of 9:00:00. My boss barely graduated high school, and my fellow coworkers have a combined IQ of a/an [ insert you favorite inanimate object ]

So I did some looking and web design seems like something I should be able to bust into fairly quickly. I already know how to program/script have made small websites before, and have access to most program needed to make a nice site.

The problem isn't learning the material, the problem is there is so much freakin crap, I don't know what is the latest and greatest, if there are considered some industry standard, or something along those lines.

I know a lot of people make websites, for both personally and professionally. So what so I be spending my time on?

For Now, I am using Vi ( its a kick ass test editor, if you don;t know what this is, just pretend I said, I am using notepad ) I see no reason to use FrontPage/Dreamweaver, but if you have "intellegent" reasons to use these feel free to provide them.

I have access to the latest version of Photoshop, Macromedia studio 2004 MX Pro ( contains Flash, Dreamweaver, and Fireworks ), FrontPage, and Vi.

I am starting by learning Flash.

Only use PHPNuke if you want to have the site do exactly the opposite of what the visitors want :)

On top of that, PHPNuke and the likes are bogging down your server like crazy... and they're not easy on your SQL database either, with all those queries. It's because PHPNuke tries to be everything but fails because of that.

I've used Photoshop and Fireworks. The intergration of Dreamweaver and Fireworks is nice, but because I was used to Photoshop I liked it better. If you haven't used Photoshop before, and only intend to make website, I guess you should stick with Fireworks, because of the intergration.

1st Thanks for your input everyone, it has been very helpful.

2nd Has anyone used Macromedia Fireworks, its supposed to be a competitor to PhotoShop. I can't find any solid evidence either way though. Personally if its even in the same ballpark, it would seem better to use Fireworks. Since Macromedia seems to be the big player right now, with Dreamweaver and Flash.

Shun, shun. Don't use Fireworks - stick with Photoshop of PSP - much better options IMHO.

PHP Nuke is only of real use if you want a general-style of site. If you want anything specific, DIY is the way.

i love photoshop personally. but just the other day i was actually using fireworks in our office and noticed a handy feature where it gives you a preview of the font style before you actually select the font. very handy for graphic designers.

anyway, fireworks isn't bad at all, i'm just more comfortable with ps :)

Yup, PHP, MySQL, (possibly CGI and Perl), definately CSS, Java, things like that - those are the best things to learn.

On a more preferencial level, choose PHP over ASP any day :)

When I make one of my pathetic attempts to create a website, I use Dreamweaver and Photoshop. Oh, and I've tried to learn some PHP too, but haven't finished the book yet. I do know it's a very handy to create dynamic pages instead of those boring static html ones. Good luck! :)

Basically Ditto to what Orion and Jules have said. Most companies / people want dynamic content so study PHP and MySQL. If you have a spare computer, you may want to install Linux (come to the Light!) and the other tools as an experiment platform.

Also, depending on how much $$$ you have access to, you may want to invest in some O'Reilly books. In my opinion they are THE BEST technical books available today. Two good ones I own are Web Design in a Nutshell and Dynamic HTML: The Definitive Reference.

Cheers.

i guess a potentially "intellegent" reason to use dreamweaver would be how you can get it to interface with the .net platform, basically keeping the backend code separate from look and feel like Orion and Kenyon mentioned :)

What Orion says, if you want to stay ahead of the game, xHTML with CSS to seperate content/style is the way to go. For maximum effect learn PHP and MySQL, to provide customers with interactive solutions, and, should you be contracted to do maintenance, an easier time on you.

Me, I use notepad when I can, if only because my code is cleaner than most programs can produce it. And Photoshop all the way for graphics... don't forget to optimize!

php, mysql, perl, python, all the big scrpting/database things you should learn. learn CSS its great good way to abstract design from content. I use xhtml1.0 standard for my site.
