Ronald Reagan, the former US President and towering figure of the Cold War political era, died last night after a long struggle with Alzheimer's disease. He was 93.
The man who started out as a B-movie actor and ended up a world statesman was at his home in California with his wife, Nancy, and two of his children, Patti Davis and Ron Junior, at his bedside.

Late last night President George W. Bush, in France to attend the D-Day anniversary commemorations, said Reagan's death was a 'sad hour in the life of America'. The former President left behind 'a nation he restored and a world he helped to save'.

Reagan's brand of free market, freewheeling politics - he was known as the 'Great Communicator' - stamped an indelible mark on the Eighties.

He will be best remembered in Britain, however, for his long partnership in power with Margaret Thatcher, who paid tribute last night to the man she called 'a truly great American hero'.

Drawn together by a strong belief in military might overseas and minimal state intervention at home, the two famously had their differences - she publicly criticised him over the US invasion of Grenada in 1983 - but it was an alliance treasured on both sides.

In a heartfelt statement last night, Thatcher said he had been one of her 'closest political and dearest friends', and would be missed by millions of people who now lived in freedom thanks to his administration: 'Ronald Reagan had a higher claim than any other leader to have won the Cold War for liberty, and he did it without a shot being fired.

'To have achieved so much against such odds and with such humour and humanity made Ronald Reagan a truly great American hero.'

The Queen was last night said to be 'saddened by the news', while in a statement Tony Blair said he would be remembered as 'a good friend to Britain' and for his 'statesmanlike pursuit of more stable relations with the Soviet Union'.

Tory leader Michael Howard said it was 'sadly ironic' that Reagan should have died just as Europe was celebrating its liberation from conflict: 'We in Britain, as in so many places around the world, owe him an everlasting debt.'

Reagan's body is expected to lie in state in Washington in the Capital Rotunda for Americans to pay their respects, before a funeral at the National Cathedral.

America has been divided over the legacy of Reagan's two terms in office. To his critics, he was a political lightweight, tarnished by scandals such as the Iran-Contra affair, and whose tough economic policies brought hardship to the poor. His wife Nancy's reliance on astrologers was much mocked, as was the President's alleged habit of taking an afternoon nap.

But to his admirers he was the man who had rolled back the forces of Communism and whose relaxed, Hollywood-honed manners - which paved the way for a more media-savvy, telegenic generation of White House incumbents - concealed a sharp strategic brain.

It was the poignancy of his diagnosis with Alzheimer's a decade ago which oddly enough brought a final reconciliation with the public. While Nancy Reagan began an energetic campaign for research into the degenerative illness, her husband retreated from the public eye in 1994 with a grace that touched many ordinary Americans.

'I now begin the journey that will lead me into the sunset of my life,' he told the nation. I know that for America there will always be a bright dawn ahead.'

We'll Miss Ya Ron, you pwnd....

Sorry to everyone.

And I am not a Mormon Cornugon, although I respect Mormons. I try to be the best Christian I can though, in all situations. Obviously not in this thread. My continued progress definitley let go of me here.

Moby = Failable

Forgive me everyone.

::edit::
I have deleted my insolent posts on this thread in hopes that this thread can focus more on it's original intent, to honor our former President.

Yeah, b****ing in this forum shows that you really lack respect for the dead.

Let's remember the positive sides of Reagan. I can't remember his period as a president, but he must have meant something to somebody since so many people payed their respect to him in this thread.

Rest in peace, Reagan...

Ok, I don't want to drop oil on the fire but I wanna react to what I've read in this thread.

Cornµgon: I think you initially misinterpretated the topic of this thread.
Nobody ever said you shouldn't express your opinion, however the way you say things is as important as the message itself.
Your very first comment in this thread was somewhat clumsy and offensive, not because you expressed your opinion but because of the choice of your words. You can't ask people to get over the words in a comment to get the content, this is a rule of basic communication.
If you want people to understand your message, put it into the right words or it will be misinterpretated. :)
And saying you don't care about DM's opinion on you but replying to every single post he makes shows that you DO care enough about what he says to reply... I let you think about it.

DM: My man, even though I don't know you very much, I know you enough to say you're better than that. I mean, come on, insulting Cornµgon is not gonna end this in any positive way for both of you :(

Back to the thread's topic: I have no special opinion about Reagan, whether he was a great US president or not, all I can say is that for sure he's marked his time.

Be all at peace :)

One of the things that i've always liked about this community is that, unlike so many gaming forums I've seen, the higher-ups permit politics in the forums. This can lead to a lot of interesting debates, and I think being allowed political expression here is wonderful.
As always, there is a "however":
However, people abuse this freedom, apparently...I'm disappointed...I thought we were better than that...

I, for one, will miss ya, Ronnie

Moby, it is true, though. It is not really about the presidency or anything like that. It's about praising a passed away man.

Actually During Reagan's term Bush Senior was Vice President, not head of the CIA. I'm not saying to praise him either, just asking you to have some respect for the man by not taking this thread as an opportunity to bash him, certainly not bash other members of the academy that do praise him, and also not bash our current president. If you really want to criticize Bush Jr. there are plenty of other threads for you to take your rants to.

lots of bad things happened including
iran - contra affair
cocaine trading routes opened up by the CIA and as a result -
crack in the USA!!!
although not all regans fault, doesnt an actor president remind you a little of a puppet?

heh... I find it very curious that when a person is alive, he can be hated, bashed and bloodied, but as soon as he is dead all that hated him or her suddenly change directions... death is certainly a curious thing.

I don't really think Reagan was much of a president, and I belive he is responsible for many of the problems in the American 'Legal' systen.

...viva la Reagan..

I actually got to meet this guy, and shake his hand in my younger years. I think he was good. Yes, I've heard plenty, and understand plenty, of the negativity people have on his death.

He spoke without reservations, and didn't need a poll to tell him what to fight for. And it is commendable, absolutely commendable, how he brought down the Soviet threat. He bankrupted then with his crazy defense initiatives. And through that, my friends, he shed many lives.

Yes, the humanity in us should mourn the deaths of those who die under Reagan's watch. But the same humanity should also cause grief at the loss of a man who fought for and spared the lives of millions, who fought for humanity itself.

If nothing else, have the humanity to mourn the loss of man. For without this amount of humanity, one is not worth compassion at their own tribulations.

And with that, I close.

I didn't like him at all when he was in office, but I was a lot younger and understood a lot less about the world. I'm happy I grew to appreciate him while he was still alive.

Congratulations on a life well lived, Mr. President. You'll be missed.

Rest in peace Mr. Reagan!

Say what you want about him, but when he was in office, my family and the economy in general was doing very well. Plus, with him leading the way to knock down the Berlin wall and reuniting Germany, a lot of my family, who hadn't seen each other in decades, finally got to reunite as well and for that I'm thankful, as are my family and other families in Germany, that they got to see each other again.

Was he perfect? Of course not. No one is. However, I'll always remember Mr. Reagan whenever I reminisce about my teenage years.

May the Force be with you, Mr. Reagan.

I was never a fan of Ronald Reagan, but I always respected him. We saw differently on many issues, but he wasn't afraid to stand up for what he thought was right and wasn't afraid to back down when he was shown he was wrong. He wasn't a man of hubris, yet he confident and extremely well spoken and articulate. If nothing else, The Great Communicator, will be remembered for a long time.

Clearly u don't know your history but that was to be expected.
