I think that what D-Day actually signifies, is a major strike by the allies that was pulled off in surprise. One of the big pushes into German occupied territory. I don't really think people consider it as the day or the event that won the war in Europe. But it is still a major day worth noting for a lot of people and countries. It was a day where a lot of young men gave up their lives in a massive offensive. And I really think that its something worth commemorating. In the US there is usually something commemorating Pearl Harbor on December 7, especially on decade aniversaries of the event and that a day we had our butts handed to us. Its still not something you should forget or consider insignificant.

You're partly right, Harris- sometimes, no one wins
However, since Hitler was defeated, everybody did win ;)
The guys who landed at Omaha, especially, amaze me...the plan could not have gone any more awry; the planes missed their targets, the navy didn't have time for the bombardment, and they were supposed to have tankson the beach...HOW DID THEY DO IT???

Another interesting viewpoint... who actually won the war?

Look at it this way: Britain and France entered the war after Poland was invaded, to honour a defence pact with Poland. At the end of the war, Russia took control of a good chunk of eastern Europe, including Poland and part of Germany. Russia made significant gains as a result of the war, and if anyone 'won' the war, it was them. We failed to defend Poland's sovreignty.

Of course, the truest answer to the question is that NOBODY won the war. In war, there are no winners. Russia's eventual territorial gains cost them 20 million lives.

To be honest, it was largely because of Russia (or Hitler's bright idea to invade Russia) that the war was won. 70% of the German forces fought on the Eastern front. 80% of German casualties were inflicted on the Eastern Front. This is not some attempt at starting an argument or belittling the efforts and sacrifices of those who fought on the western front. It can safely be assumed that the war would have been won without the D-Day landings, but it would certainly have taken longer and a large part of Europe would have come under the control of the USSR. I just think it's rather remarkable that so few in Britain and America are aware of the scale of the fighting in the East. I suppose it's largely down to the cold war.

A bunch of paratroopers who landed in Normandy want to celebrate the anniversary of the invasion by recreating their famous jump.

Now all due respect to these guys, to whom we owe an incalculable debt, but...I think most of these guys at their current age would break several bones in a jump from the bottom step of their stairs. I've never done it, but I'm told that landing from a parachute jump is about the equivalent of a jump from a 15-foot ledge (which I have done--ouch!).

I strongly doubt we would.

PS: Not trying to lessen the sacrifice of the peeps who fought on D-Day. But there was more, there was the rest of WW2.

But the D-Day was fundamental, without it i doubt the war would turn out that way.
Rest in peace whoever fought in the D-Day.

But Germany was in decline. D-Day was just one of the final blows. Not the turning point. As much as Germany owned Europe in the beginning of the war, as well as middle, they would've been defeated in the end, D-Day or no D-Day.
