RL Place as a Map?

I'm looking to make a map of a place that really exists. Its a park that my bro and I used to play Manhunt and Photon/Laser Tag in when we were kids with our friends. I thought it would make an awesome JK2 map(not sure FFA,CTF or both yet). Does ne1 have any overall advice they could share? This would be my 1st real map, though.
Thx in advance! :)

Mohawk - did they finalize the design yet? I heard they were talking over a few, hadn't heard if they made a decision yet. They should just rebuild them as a big f*ck you to those terrorist schmucks!

Java - LOL...I'll tell them I'm John Smith from Omaha, Nebraska!

When you ask the Port Authority for the plans, though, don't tell them your name is Mohamed Abu al Kilya or anything like that. ;)

Hey get the designs of the NEW wtc design and make one, hehe.... that'd be mad cuz the design is nutty cool.

As far as measuring, just make sure you keep it all relative and it'll be great. If you need any help or whatever lemme know, I'm interested to see how it's coming!

Jumpin Jedi - That sounds like an awesome idea for a map! I had an idea to make a map of NYC of the WTC b4 9-11 as kinda a tribute. Haven't really planned much of that yet. Now that it's not there ne more, it's gonna be tough to go there to get the mental picture. But my brother used to work there (he was in the N tower during the attack) so maybe I can pick his brain if I ever decide to make the map.
Thx for the advice!!!

I'm thinking of mapping Edinburgh Castle, and the Royal Mile, here in Edinburgh. I'd have to have a good walk around Edinburgh Castle, which would cost me some money, but believe me - it would make a GREAT FFA Map. It's just a shame we can't have the 1 O'clock gun :(

Anyway, my advise to you is to simply measure all the gaps, length of platforms etc of the park you're planning on mapping, and convert that into JKII. A player spawn point is like 6ft, so you can use that as a point of reference.

Thx Charon, so far I've got the parking lot (great place for duels!) and the street outside mostly done, just gotta add the custom textures! I may add a couple of cars into it, maybe even breakable. I think if a rocket hits a car, the car should explode. This thing is gonna take me quite a while to finish!
btw - lol at lazer tag, unfortunately, I don't recall what a starlight is, mostly played Photon.

Billy, my advice: Never stop playing laser tag! w00t, nice to find somone else who remembers what a Starlight is. ;>
Seriously, I used to map for Half-Life, I ran out of patience for it though. The best I can tell you, is work in small sections that you can compile and test before moving on to other things. Like start with the grassy area of the park, and just make sure you get the geometry and scale down first. Then add the lighting to that. Then move on to adding the playground equipment, rinse, repeat. It seems slower, and it probably is, but I found in the two maps that I made, and the one other I helped with, that you'll be much happier with the result.

DJ--I actually took a break of a few months from JK2 and from mapmaking. Right now I work on my map on the weekends mostly. I expect a rough draft some time around the end of March, at which time I'll be recruiting volunteers to do the voices and will post some screenshots.

The sandcrawler map is the first of a series of seven maps which I may or may not ever actually complete. When I set out I had a story in mind but wanted to do a SP game with multiple possible endings, where the ending of one map determines what happens next--sort of a Quake-engine-based choose-your-own-adventure, if anyone remembers those. I have the whole storyline written out, but it's pretty ambitious, so I don't know if I'll ever finish it, especially considering how long it's taking to do just one map.

I considered also making a multiplayer map with the sandcrawler in it, but the interior--at least my vision of the interior--is a little cramped to be fun for multiplayer (Jawas evolved from rodents, my sources tell me, so their homes resemble rodent warrens).

I was just thinking that I'm gonna start making a much simpler map(or maps) 1st just to get the hang of using Radiant again. But the "Lakeland Park" map will be made!!! Thanx for the advice folks!

If you want some practice working with Radiant's tools, go find an old JK MP level and try to make it. Nothing too fancy, just something to practice on.

I would reccomend sketching the place if you're so inclined.

Jaaguy: you've been working on that map forever. Hows it coming along?

Spend lots of time on sfx (like flashing lights and stuff) and lighting can change the whole mood of the map, just dont use too many lights or itll take FOREVER to compile

Thx Java! That's a great idea, never would have thought of it myself. I have a lot of the pictures in my mind already just from going to the park a lot as a kid. I was also able to d/l a map of the park to get the layout of the boardwalks and other paths. But I'll definitely take photos for the textures though!
Thx agin!!!

Take lots of photos of the place.

If you have access to a digital camera, take photos of the actual textures, and use them as the textures in your map. I'm making a map of a Jawa sandcrawler, and I've used the tiles from my kitchen as a texture for the floor in one room.
