America has come out and revealed it has removed over 1.7 metric tons of nuclear radioactive material from Iraq secretly over the last month. Along with 1.77 tonnes of enriched uranium, 1000 "highly radioactive sources" were removed.

The material was taken from a former nuclear research facility on 23 June, after being packaged by 20 experts from the US Energy Department's secret laboratories.

It was flown out of the country aboard a military plane in a joint operation with the Department of Defense, and is being stored temporarily at a DOD facility.

The United Nations nuclear watchdog - the International Atomic Energy Agency - and Iraqi officials were informed ahead of the operation, which happened ahead of the 28 June handover of sovereignty.

Interesting, very interesting, considering this is the day after Tony Blair admits he may never find WMDs.
1.77 TONNES of uranium.. that's ALOT of Uranium.. Heck, America will probably throw it straight back into their own weapons programmes...
Interesting to see the 'highly radioactive sources' is an ambigious thing, meaning that PERHAPS Iraq had more advanced nuclear items than America did, or have created something new that America didnt understand?

Updates:

Update 1; Members have linked this and an incident where Coalition trucks were stopped carrying IN nuclear radioactive materials to Iraq, on the Kuwait boarder. The source for that is Here

Speculation is already adrift that this may be another thing to boost Bush's standings in the upcoming elections, along with the rumoured capturing of Osama Bin Laden being hidden until a time nearer the elections...

More Updates:
Sources close to ATSNN reporting staff are raising doubts concerning the origin of a large shipment of radioactive material flown into the United States by the Department of Defense and Department of Energy.

Reports state that the material was part of a large find at an Iraqi nuclear facility on June 23rd, as reported earlier.

The large shipment was flown into the United States (some reports state Tennessee) in a joint operation between DOD and DOE.

However, sources are speaking of large amounts of nuclear weapons that were relocated from at least one U.S. military base in Rammstein, Germany, in the past month.

These statements have not been confirmed in any official capacity.

This is a developing story.

Additionally....
According to United Nations News Center, this has been from a nuclear material storage facility near the Tuwaitha complex south of Baghdad

Quote:

Dr. ElBaradei 7 July 2004 –

On 30 June, Washington informed the IAEA that the transfer of some nuclear material stored at “Location C” – an area previously referred to by the Agency as a nuclear material storage facility near the Tuwaitha complex south of Baghdad – had taken place a week earlier.

According to the letter, “the transferred material consisted of low enriched uranium in the form of approximately 1.8 tons of uranium enriched to 2.6 per cent in uranium-235, as well as some additional 3 kilograms of uranium of various low enrichments.”

Contrary to many news reports saying the US had cooperated with the UN's IAEA on tranfering Iraqs Uranium to an undisclosed location in the US (believed to be Tennesee) The UN's IAEA is now saying no permission was granted according to an AP report.

Quote:

original news source:

story.news.yahoo.com
UNITED NATIONS - The United States didn't have authorization from the U.N. nuclear watchdog when it secretly shipped from Iraq (news - web sites) uranium and highly radioactive material that could be used in so-called "dirty bombs," U.N. officials said Wednesday.

"The American authorities just informed us of their intention to remove the materials, but they never sought authorization from us," said Gustavo Zlauvinen, head of the IAEA's New York office.

Its understandable to remove these materials from Tuwaitha keeping them out of the hands of terrorists. But at this late stage why the lack of cooperation on the removal of known stocks of nuclear material that the US had allowed to be resecured under UN auspices in June 2003 and then left under US guard.

They didn't creat a new Kinda Uranium. "Highly Radioactive" means that it was a good grade of Uranium. Just as a diamond's quality can vary, so can uranium. Its great that it was siezed, but I would like to know where it came from. 1+ tons of uranium can make alot of nukes!

What'd you expect? That world politics wouldn't be politically motivated? I know it seems like timing, and it would be a wise thing, but belive it or not....

Most politically motivated actions are caused by OTHER politically motivated actions.

So, maybe this was caused by Fahrenheit 9/11 (a movi I have yet to steal, ume, er....WATCH)
Fahrenheit 9/11 was caused by outrage over 9/11
9/11 happened because intelligence was flawed
INtelligence was flawed because intelligenca agencies were too compartmentalized
They were too compartmentalized because of directives set forth under the Clinton Administration (but not particularly Clinton).
And on and on...

(these are just suppositions for illustration purposes....)

So yeah. I don't think it's JUST because of Fahrenheit 9/11 (or even if...this movie can't hit that hard). It's prolly due to Blair statements, and then Kerry picking a VP and being all over the news. But if it WERE some form of presidential ploy, it'd have hit the news networks like wildfire. But then again, they're waiting for the IAEA.

I'll keep watch on what comes across.

It's probably not propaganda, but something does smell rotten. I mean we've given UN inspectors how long and had how many americans prowling all over Iraq for WMD only to NOW find them when the chips are down and Blair says there may never have been WMD? It sounds like just the thing to give Bush's campagin a kick in the pants with Farenheit9/11 out and poor poll scores.

Last time I checked, the UN and the IAEA doesn't do propaganda for the Presidential race. But that's just me.

It might not show up on the news. For some odd reason this hasn't hit very many news outlets. I know the group I belong to is still looking into things...I'll let you know when I know more.
