I think the moral of the story is: GUNS ARE DANGEROUS PEOPLE Im sure he didn't intend to castrate himself in such a violent manner, but from what I read it sounds like poetic justice. So just remember, never point a gun at any human being, even if you think it's not loaded. Yes and no. There are two problems with this. The first is the principle of the rule of law. The law is supposed to apply to everyone the same, and penalty is supposed to be determined by the criminal's actions. There can be mitigating (or aggravating) circumstances that make the crime less serious (or more serious), but those have to do with the criminal's reasons for comitting the crime, not with the fortune or misfortune that followed. A bank robber, for example, should get a minimum of a certain number of years according to what the law says the penalty is for that crime; the bank robber isn't allowed a free ride if he loses a leg in a car crash trying to escape. The penalty is for the crime itself. Anything else undermines the rule of law. The other thing to consider here, and it's no small matter, is that the guy who blew his nuts off is now going to be angrier than ever at the guy he was planning, however ineptly, to shoot. He obviously wins no prizes for mental stability and is going to blame the other guy. He's going to want revenge, and we don't need to speculate whether he's willing to resort to violence because we know for a fact that he's very willing, even if he's not very good at it.
