IIRC, Einstein predicted black holes long before any such phenomenon was ever observed. They follow from GR. I believe an astronomer then discovered a star moving as though it were in a binary star system, two stars orbiting one another, except that it had no sister star...that we could see. Other such "phantom" effects have been observed and are consistent with the presence of black holes. Radiotelescope data has also been recorded that is consistent with black holes as physicists understand them. So no, nobody has ever "seen" one. Since not much is known about them, there could be another explanation for these phenomena, but the evidence is looking pretty good despite the scientific community's evolving picture of how exactly they "work."

hmm, well a spiral galaxy, like the Milky Way we are in, has a center of rotation. It would make sense that a black hole in the center, has provdided enough gravitational pull to keep the neighboring stars around it within its range without pulling them in. Thus, the surrounding area of the black hole is dense with stars, and it just spreads out from there. Spiral Galaxies are pretty much appear as hurricanes at the cosmic level.

Theoretically they exist. There are things out in space we believe to be black holes. I don't know if there is definite proof of them that scientists actually say "yes that is definitely a black hole." At the center of our galaxy there is supposedly a black hole.

What is a black hole anyways? Is it a rip in the time space continuum? Where are they out there? Do we have any in our galaxy? This thread reminds me of the video "Black Hole Sun".

I remember hearing that Hawking had also lost another bet about black holes a few years earlier. I don't remember the conditions of that bet though.

Wow, so if we can get the sub-atomic particles emitted from a black hole, we could actually predict the future and learn about the past. Interesting
