Okay, I have this question on my Vacation assignment for maths, and I can't figure out head nor tails to this one

Does anyone get this?

Since I can't translate exactly, I'll tell you what's the point:

I have to search for a number which is 0 or above, it can't be negative, and if you do
ThisNumber + ThisNumber² then it has to be the smallest number possible, but still above 0

Of course, the easiest thing to do would be saying:
The Number = 1
or
The Number = 0

Of course, I have to give some kind of an explanation why I chose these numbers

Can anyone offer any assistance?
Thanks in advance, cuz I'm really stumped on this one...

I've tried googling, but didn't seem to find a site answering my question

Wait, I thought Zero wasnt a number? Doesn't it have some goofy definition, like its just the absence of any number?

I am probably wrong

hehe, I handed it in today

I should know my result in September

I'll let you people know :P

Well anyway, I used 0 as the answer

besides this, everything else went really well, so one question that goes bad isn't at all bad :D

Thanks for everyone explaining this!
It was greatly appreciated :D

I agree with Mune.

Maybe your teacher just made this question look difficult, while the answer is easy? :)

EDIT: Just read the question again, and realised that you said the ANSWER has to be above 0... if it is 'above 0', the answer is going to be 0.0000(infinite 0's)001, since the closer the number is to 0, the x squared bit will get exponentially smaller and smaller, plus the very very already small added constant (x) :)

In conclusion, there is no definite answer to this question, as it goes on forever. Basically, you have a lower limit of 0, whereby your answer can never reach 0, but gets closer and closer to it as you add more 0's. Hope that answers your question :D

That's what I would say, given that it has to be the smallest possible non-negative number. Then again, a second opinion doesn't hurt, right?;)

Thank you Mune

Well, I've asked around to be sure about this

It seems it can be 0 and everything above, so 0 would be my answer, right?

Now, if it is 0 + 0 squared, then yeah, it's the smallest possible number, because zero is the smallest non-negative number. I mean, something smaller would immediately be negative, larger would be a decimal (unless it has to be a whole number, then 1 in this case)... could you clarify if it can be zero, or has to be bigger? :)
