As many of you surely know the new Doom 3 has been quite a pain for many players in performing, this due to it's amazing need for powaah!  Well, I have a solution that boosts up everyone, just don't know how much on slower comps.. The method is very simple but yet so obvious and effective.. Goes like this: As you've prolly noticed Doom 3 is built up the same way as JKA, with doom.exe and some .pk4 files.. Theese .pk4 files should be unzipped to the base folder, and then you should delete the already extracted .pk4 files.. with this done the game wont start to unpack all videos and graphix.. Just to make it clear: uncompressing the .pk4 files will only remove the stutters you get when going through doorways, as the game loads another lot of textures. headphones help make it immersive too, even if your computer is a bit noisy. i loved the people answering question #15 over and over again in that thread, pretty damn funny. i almost read the whole darn thing, up to post #280 or so. got tired of reading though bottom line, low end systems see more performance boost (maining jerky loading went away, rarely any FPS boost at all) with the recommended image_cacheMegs, image_useCache, and image_cacheMink tweaks. and don't use the useCache command w/o turning up cacheMink. your game will crash hard. _______________ this is the internet, be serious damn it! Er....Bail. ... You posted the same link I did. But yeah, that be great then. If you continue on the forums, you see that at most times it doesn't do much. Some see a boost, others don't. Oh, and you want to know what I did to make the game even freakier.... Well, for one, I have a heatsink/heatpipe on my graphics card. And then.... I got, just today, a fanless (totally heatsink) power supply. End result....my comp is now damn near silent. I'm at the point where the loudest noise is the SATA HDD access (and yes, it is silent, not a grinding like the drive will crash. Now to silence that hard drive more. Hehehe.) Silent computer just adds to freakiness of Doom 3. Kinda hard to be startled during a silent part when the comp is going MROOOOOOOOAAAAAARRRRRRRRRRRrrrrrr Well, worth noting. _______________ Jedi do not fight for peace. Yes the game loads up a pk4, finds the file it needs grabs the data, loads the data for use then closes the pk4 file, this is much faster than searching the harddrive for the file. THis is all so good since all the needed files are in one huge file their is less chance of file fragmentation. meaning that parts of one file are spread out across the hardrive. So all files in one pk4, the files are all right their no need to search the disk for the data, just the pack file. The only reason you *could* be getting a performance boost is that since d3 is about 2gb to install your drive has become fragmented and when you uncompressed the files they were put in a clean area of the drive where theya re not really fragmented, so its best to use the pk4, and defrag your harddrive. _______________ When a Man lies he murder's some part of the world. Well this unzipping .pk4 worked for me and I have a quite fast toy here.. I guess?  Anyway there are ofcourse a lot of other things you can do to manually boost the performance in a game, and this is just one thing I discovered.. I dunno how it works exactly, the searching of textures and stuff from the pk4 files, I just assume it doesn't load the whole .pk4 -file before you start playing.. The way I see it is that the game unzips all necessary data as it runs. Now, when they're already unpacked and are in the folders they're exist on in the packed .pk4 -file, the game disables the unpacking option.. This is just my assumption since I really don't know how the game actually operates, and this seems like a logical explanation to the fact that it boosted up the ingame performance on my computer.. I hope someone could tell me for a fact how it works.. Thank you and continue posting your links and opinions to other performance upgrades to Doom 3.. uhh unpacking all the pk4 files defeates the purpose of having them, pack files are suppost to speed up load times, in that the game only has to load up one file like asset0.pk4, and just hop around in that file to find everything else, unpacking those will totally fragment your hardrive and then slow down performainc, as with any big game install, i would defrag my drive after installing d3, jka, jk2, q3, and soon hl2 _______________ When a Man lies he murder's some part of the world. Ataris: At first I thought you were suggesting just deleting the files. That would be a freaking mess and screw everything up. But you are right that you can just unzip them all to the base folder. If you got a slow processor or not enough memory this is a good idea. There is no good reason not to, but I personally think it's not worth the effort. _______________ I must not fear . lol I hope you know what this option is dont you? seta image_cacheMegs "32" the name says it already x_x IMAGE....CACHE....MEGS lol its the amount of RAM you wanna use for doom3´s textures to cache in megabytes the same in jk3 > cg_chunkmegs < (the cmd is propably wrong coz i cant remember how its spelled correctly) thx 4 the tip btw =) _______________ Find out more about the Jedi Academy Aurochs here and more about Masta here! w00t it worked? I always thought that the engine was coded to read ONLY the .pk3 files...so if they r missing the game would be like > CMD: Read blabla.pk3 Reading...
