An old post of mine:

Quote:
The JAP tag isn't everything. You can STILL learn the game if you're JAS, you can STILL become JAK if you are JAS. JAPs are not considered to be better than JASs. Seeking a JAP "rank" (which is nothing but a tag, actually) isn't what you should dedicate yourself to :) First you should get to know the community well enough; then get to know the people. Trust me, JAKs+ take padawans that they've met on the servers or IRC channel, not padawans whose name they've seen in some silly thread.

Once you get to know the people, try to learn from them. After your duels, ask them what you did wrong, how you can improve; stuff like that :) After you do that, listen to those guys' advice and try to improve. If you STILL think you need a master (and you have been hanging out in the servers or IRC lately) then go for it. Look at the JAK+ posting in "looking for padawan" thread, and contact the ones that have a GMT offset close to yours. Even better, if you prefer some JAK+ over another, try asking him. Don't be disappointed if they don't accept you. Most JAK+ are somewhat busy; they have a RL too. You can go on w/o a master with the way I said before :) As a matter of fact, I find that way better than any other way. Heck, the 100-200 people that hang out in the server, of which you might advise from, know WAY more stuff (as a summary) than 1 or 2 JAK+ :)

I hope you take my post into consideration :) Having a master is not everything. If you really wanna get one, follow my advice :)

Hope things work out for you,
- cmad

Yeah M8 don't be in a rush. Just play the servers, meet people, and make friends. Have fun!
My advise. Take advantage of the classes. The JAK's and JAT's really know what they r doin. soak up that knowledge. I have learned a lot from them.

I think he means that when he got here, he put 'being a student' and 'achieving the rank' and all, above all else.
Now he plays for the fun :)
That's the way I understood it anyway.

And yes, I think he's right. if you're continously asking everyone:
Can I be your padawan?
they'll surely begin to get annoyed with you.
That's what I think anyway

I posted this once elsewhere on the site, and I guess it will help in this situation.

I think I speak for a lot of students in this:

Getting an 'official' master is tough and takes time. You don't want to spend all your time here just relentlessly pursuing JAK+ to be your master, so I recommend you first turn to other students for training.

I'm sure you are familiar with the term 'unofficial master' - where someone who is not a ranked member takes you as their padawan. This is a great thing and just because someone doesn't have a [JAK] by their name doesn't mean they are less of a master.

However some of the more experianced students are a bit hesitant to 'take a padawan'. I personally do not take unofficial padawans. I DO however, have students that I help, train with, and generally keep an eye on. The vast majority of the student body is the same way. We do not yet feel like we are really 'masters', but we are more than happy to help newer students achieve.

For you new students, heed this message. Your fellow JAS are an awesome resource for learning. Don't worry so much about finding a master right away - over time it will become more clear to you who your master should be. Until then, work with the other students to advance in skill. Make friends and enjoy yourselves. Feel free to contact anyone for help - that is what the JA is all about.

Lets look at it from a Knight's perspective: there are two new students. One has joined and learned that Knights, Trainers, etc take Padawans and train them. He really likes this idea and spends his time looking for a master. He goes to all the JAK+ asking them (occasionally multible times) if he can be their Padawan - even if the JAK+ has never met/heard/seen them before. This puts the Knight (or other rank) in a very uncomfortable situation: having to let some poor chap down. The Knight doesn't know the student; much less if the student has an attitude that the Knight approves of, what the student's intentions are, or if the student is even going to be there next month. The student's intentions are good, but his goals are misleading him.

The other new student spends his time training with his fellow students. He is involved in sparring and discussions on how to improve. He has fun and is getting to know the other students. He recognizes the value of classes and attends them. JAK+ can relax when he comes to talk to them because they know he isn't coming to ask them for Padawanship.

If you were a Knight, who would you choose to be your Padawan? I think most would choose the 2nd student. For a Knight (or other rank), taking a Padawan is a sacrifice of time. It's important to them that their sacrifice is not wasted. That's why Knights wait until they are confident that the student is 'trainable'. Good luck!

Aye, get to know ppl 1st. Go into the server and classes and learn from other students. Most will be more than willing to help you. I say develop your style before you get a master. Dueling on the servers will allow you to see a range of styles and learnfrom them all. If you do not then your style might naturally break away from wut a master is teaching and cause probs.

To get a Master isn't simple.

First, read this.
This is a simple text to explain where you can get a master. Please also note that this thread (the one I just gave you the link too) is not the place to ask for a master.

Next, the worst thing you can do is just randomly ask them to be your master. First of all realize that you don't need a master to excel at this game. It does help though provided that you pick the best master for you. Things to consider is their style of playing (do you agree with it, is it one you admire), their attitude (do you like them, are you friends with them), their timezone (will you two be able to get on at similar times), and if you feel like you can learn a lot from them.

The only way you're going to be able to make these decisions is to get to know them first. Keep an eye out for them on the servers, or leave a message on their profile. Try to avoid using the word master...because that's actually not what you're looking for yet. Ask them if next time you see them on the server (if they are not busy - always be respectful of the one you want to learn from), if you could ask them a few questions about the game.

If you see one in the game and he is not busy, introduce yourself and duel with them a bit. Ask them questions about your fighting style and ask if they'll show you a few things. I'm sure they will be more than happy to help. Get to know them over time. After awhile it will become very clear to you who should be your master. And if they feel like they know you and that you have the right attitude, then I'm sure they will accept you. Good luck!

Many thanks to Tido for typing this up.

Hey man, just so you know this isn't the place to be posting this. If you want to move up in the game than start going to classes. Being a padawan just means you have private classes with someone, ususally for one-on-one training or because you can't make it to classes. Padawans are no higher of a rank than students. If you really have your heart set on becoming a JAK in the future take a look in the Being a JAK forum, and see what is required of them. Trust me when I say you have a long way to go before that happens. But like I said, padawans are no better then students, rankwise or skillwise for the most part. Please take this into consideration before asking to be someone's paddy. :)
