Posh means approximately smart and fashionable. “Oh yes, Mater, we had a posh time of it down there.” A quotation from Punch from 1918, which is the first recorded instance of posh. Posh was also the 19th- and early 20th-century slangword in Britain for "money", especially a halfpenny, or similar cash of small value. This word is derived from the Romanian language, påh, which means "half", and was used for example with påhera, which means halfpenny. Posh also means "a dandy", which appeared in two slang dictionaries, published in 1890 and 1902. Another etymological quirk is that some claim posh to be the result of an acronym POSH, meaning "Port Out, Starboard Home", which referred to the more expensive side of the passenger boats traversing between England and India in the mid-19th century.
