Fox Picks up on ILM NDA Story

Paul tells us that Fox 10 news at 9 just did a quick story about the ILM NDA's. Cr33dos3On also tells us that the Phoenix, Arizona newscasters mentioned that those involved with the Star Wars movies had to sign a non disclosure agreement in regard to epsisodes VII-IX....and they also showed a few clips from AotC with Padme. The rumors persist ...

Australian Rumors for SW Sequels

Dean sends in this quick bit of news from down under:
Just wondering is there any truth in that George Lucas is thinking of going ahead with episodes 7,8,9 I heard it here on Australian TV breakfast show yesterday 23/8/04 if it is true. That'll be awesome for STAR WARS - I hope it is true.
Gaz
Just letting you know that on the national news on the radio today in Australia mentioned that George Lucas may be secretly planning to release two more star wars movies set after the original trilogy.
And finally, here's the one that counts from a friend of the production:
I will not go into details until I get more info, BUT here in Australia I just got a call from someone, who was told by an ILM worker that ILM has been signed up for Episodes 7, 8, 9!!!! That is all they could say. I won't mention any names (plus this could be a joke, but this person NEVER jokes about Star Wars). They also confirmed about signing those documents about keeping it hush-hush. This is exciting news and it seems Star Wars will be calling Australia home.
Again, keep in mind this is still rumor at best ..

Lucasfilm Denies SW Sequel Rumors

YourMom01 points us to Digital Spy for some interesting tidbits about the rumors surrounding the sequel trilogy:
Lucasfilm recently denied plans to film more films in the Star Wars franchise, and George Lucas himself has always denied such plans. Perhaps the agreements allegedly signed by the effects company see the beginning of a change of policy.
EOnline has a great story on the subject today as well. Here's a clip - head there for the complete story!
But the franchise lay dormant the rest of the decade--the closest Lucas came to doing a sequel was green-lighting a series of best-selling books by sci-fi author Timothy Zahn in the early '90s.

Things were looking grim until 1997, when Lucas revived interest in the space opera with spiffed-up versions of the original trilogy--1977's Star Wars (now rechristened Star Wars: Episode IV--A New Hope), 1980's The Empire Strikes Back (Star Wars: Episode V--The Empire Strikes Back), and 1983's Return of the Jedi (Star Wars: Episode VI--Return of the Jedi).

Following those successful rereleases, Lucas went to work on the prequels. But in a 1998 interview with Vanity Fair, the writer-director denied ever having any plans to make nine Star Wars movies.

"When you see it in six parts, you'll understand," Lucas said at the time. "It really ends at part six."

Star Wars: Episode I--The Phantom Menace came out in 1999 and Star Wars: Episode II--Attack of the Clones followed in 2002. While both films took a critical drubbing, they more than made up for it at the box office, earning a more than $1.5 billion combined worldwide.

Lucas plans on issuing a four-disc DVD box set of the original trilogy on Sept. 21 followed by the last prequel (or sixth Star Wars movie, depending on how you count 'em), Star Wars: Episode III--Revenge of the Sith, is scheduled to open theatrically on May 19, 2005. And that will be it.

do you believe the rumors or LucasFilm?

HAHAHA nice.

I say bring on the 7,8, and 9. But. It would ONLY work if they picked a decent additional trilogy (The ones with Thrawn or the Jedi Search ones would be good).

Yeah a mini series or movie about when the Jedi and the Sith first started fighting each other. That would be awsome.

Yeah it really sounds like things will move towards TV for Star Wars, and I can't help but think that will be better for Star Wars overall.

Quote:
AP: After "Episode III," will you ever revisit "Star Wars"?

Lucas: Ultimately, I'm going to probably move it into television and let other people take it. I'm sort of preserving the feature film part for what has happened and never go there again, but I can go off into various offshoots and things. You know, I've got offshoot novels, I've got offshoot comics. So it's very easy to say, "Well, OK, that's that genre, and I'll find a really talented person to take it and create it." Just like the comic books and the novels are somebody else's way of doing it. I don't mind that. Some of it might turn out to be pretty good. If I get the right people involved, it could be interesting.

Any movies made would run the risk of overlapping the bulk of the Expanded Universe novels and potentially nullifying events that have occurred during them that a lot of people like.(more so than the prequels have already done) And if you think that Lucas would make movies out of the novels published already, I think you guys are seriously delusional and putting too much faith in what you hope Lucas would do. With Television he can go to the time period between the trilogies, the time period before either one, or even events going on during them. It opens up a lot more possible things without the risk of ticking off a bunch of nerds, me being one of them.

I don't hope they make anymore SW movies after EPIII, atleast not connecting them to a trilogy. Cause they would need to find new acteurs to play Han Solo, Luke Skywalker, Leia etc. And that would suck IMO.

I tend to think that 7,8, and 9 would revolve around the New Jedi Order series. George Lucas actually came up with the original basis for that story and had a lot more involvement in it's making than any of the other novel series that are out. Plus it makes for better cinema than more of the Empire and Sith, that would just be too many movies of the same war in my opinion.

It would also make sense of what Furious is saying, considering that the New Jedi Order series takes place 25-30 years after the events of A New Hope.

I doubt they would make a 7 through 9 because most of the actors woudl be too old and in retirement homes.

I got this from theforce.net:

snap-hiss files this analysis after reading recent reports on ILM and the infamous NDAs. Do signs point more to a live action TV show rather than 3 more films? We are starting to agree with this - and you should note TFN posted a few months ago the probability of a Young Indy series coming to the SW universe. Check this out:
Hey guys, snap-hiss here... just wanted to send you something I've been thinking about for the past few days that really seems to make since with what we know so far in regards to the reports about three more films.

Lucas has said many times that there will be no more SW films after Episode 3, however he has said that with the success of the Clone Wars Cartoon Shorts there is a strong possibility of more SW on the small screen. The recent reports of non disclosure agreements being given to ILM employees regarding Episodes 7-9 could easily have simply covered Star Wars material on the timeline post Return of the Jedi, and whoever leaked it just took this to mean three more films would be made, as this has been conjecture for years. If this is the case I would say then that Lucas is planning a live action television series that takes place after ROTJ. First the reasons why it is doubtful there will be three more films, then I'll give my reasons for believing the non disclosure agreements were regarding a television project.

The report stated that it was ILM employees who were given the NDAs to sign. This itself doesn't fit because ILM would be the very last people to work on the film, they don't get work until after photography is wrapped, and to have them sign an NDA for films that don't even have scripts yet... just doesn't sound right. Also even if he had plans in his head to do these films they would be on hold for quite some time. He has a number of projects lined up for after Return of the Sith including the fourth Indiana Jones film, so it would be really jumping the gun to tell his staff about this, something that he couldn't even start writing for another 2-3 years at the soonest, and with the extreme level of secrecy kept on even the films we know about, it would be an odd move for him to just throw out information so early that he knows would be leaked. I could see him just telling maybe John Knoll and Rob Coleman only, but in that case it wouldn't have been leaked in the first place.

Now, as far as the reasons for believing a show is in the works... we all know Lucas loves to release different things simultaneously to build hype. Next spring we will get more animated Clone Wars shorts weeks before Episode 3 opens, and this would be an excellent time to announce such a move. Also, if he were to make a live action show it would no doubt be a staging ground for a ton of digital effects, just like what he did with the Young Indiana Jones Chronicles show, hence ILM being brought on board now as their schedules would need to be cleared, PLUS it would be the newer and lesser experienced artists in ILM that are not working on big budget films (e.g. ROTS) that would be brought on for this project, so it makes sense then that this information could have been leaked by one or more of these people which is how we found out about the non disclosure agreements in the first place.

I predict that we can expect to hear unofficial rumblings beginning sometime within the next six months regarding this, and an official announcement by April of next year, probably at Celebration 3.

Besides, Even if there were Ep7,8, and 9, He would have to go off the books that have been writin. And it wouldnt be that exciting knowing wuts gonna happen. Think about it. There are books covering the timeline from the end of ROTJ all they way to the end of NJO. Plus I hear they are coming out with more books after NJO. I doubt he would want to change the SW "history" or timeline, which ever term u prefer.

Star Wars was originally in 9 parts, but was cut down to the middle 3 since that was where the majority of the action and interesting bits were. Then the 'prequels' came out for 1-3 to add to 4-6. That leaves 7-9 which I believe will come about as a poorly executed money grab.

I pray to God that there won't be a 7,8,9. And especially if Lucas wants to "direct" again or writes the scripts himself. Frankly the authors who have worked in the expanded universe have done a far better job overall with the events after ROTJ than George Lucas has done with the events in the Prequels.

No, I don't think it would ever happen...and if it did, it would be after George Lucas' death and the release of SW to another director by the company or family, depending on the details of a will. And that is still VERY unlikely.
