Hi there,

Please join me in speaking out against the Beijing 2008
Olympics. As long as the Chinese government occupies Tibet and
oppresses its own people, it does not deserve the honor of
hosting such a prestigious international event.

Politics are always involved, yes; but imo, using the sport to pressure a country, is just wrong, and pretty much blackmailing - no matter what that country did.

The Olympics are most certainly not all about the money. There are government politics involved in nearly if not all of our day-to-day activities, Olympics included.

That kept in mind, let's not forget that the Olympics are a representation of what is possible for the world. People representing countries from all around, competing, but showing friendship and admiration for their each other.

The Olympics always have been a prestigious event. It blows me away to see that people don't think so.

Why don't you try telling the athletes who competed in those games that it's not prestigious. Tell the people who use their Gold Medals to provide services and community development to their homes and bring publicity to human rights and social issues with the fame they've garnered.

Just because our media doesn't pick it up doesn't mean it doesn't matter.

Also, it's ... sickening, frankly, to see how quickly war comes into this conversation. Believe it or not, conflicts can be resolved without the necessity of mass violence. Attitudes like "such-and-such will not happen without a war" is the reason wars happen in the first place.

Now I'm not a pacifist, but neither am I a war-monger. It's just plain depressing to witness the opinions I've seen displayed here so flippantly talking about war - MASS MURDER, for those of you unfamiliar what a war actually means.

Sorry if that's blunt but that's the truth.

If you think China is so bad, then I'm almost afraid to see what you thought of Iraq...

It's sports. Making it a political tool is just making it even more embarassing to the roots than it already is.

Ofcourse it's true China has commited an horrible
crime in Tibet, but even the Dalai Lama (which is like
the king and pope of Tibet when it was an independant
country) is okay with the Olympic games there.

It's horrible and one day Tibet should be a free
country again but why would you cancel the
Olympic games for it....

Reports from Beijing indicate that as the city prepares for the games, a
large number of people are being forcibly evicted from their homes to make
way for city development projects

In March this year, Chinese local authorities and developers evicted
hundreds of thousands of homeowners and tenants in Beijing.

The Olympics are a farce as it is. And why mix MORE politics into it, than the pretty heavy doze there's already in it?

EDIT: Btw, I wouldn't say it's THAT prestigeous - last I checked, Greece was facing profit loss on hosting this thing. But that was more than a week ago.

I doubt any other country will want to take it up at such short notice. The would have to build a stadius most likely for it.

Tibet is a region covered mostly by the Himalaya's. China took it over sometime after the communists took over the government and claimed that its part of China. Most in Tibet don't like that fact and you have a lot of others who want China to give up the occupation of the region. They also heavily monitor people who visit the place and what they see and take out. At least they were still doing that a few years ago. We had channel 1 in my high school and they had a reporter go there and their camera and film were confiscated by the chinese before they left. Someone smuggled it out for them though. China has also had numerous instances of human's rights violations over the year's as well.

i disagree with that, i do know that chinese are a communist country and their government seems more important than the people themselves, but from what i've seen when i was over there this summer, i was amazed. they're very kind, generous, and awesome, and to not give this thing that they've wanted to actually see in front of their eyes, and hold in their hands, would truly break the hearts of 2 billion peeps. so i say THIS ONE'S FOR CHINA! hallelujah. anyways, there's always the 2112 olympics:P
