I don't suggest removing padawans at all. I love the movies and want to keep true to their nature. One suggestion is to drop the JAP tag and just not wear a tag at all (which I do..I do not mean to suggest I am anything greater than anyone else so I chose not to wear my tag). My other solution is far different. It goes into the direction of actually making JAP a rank. Now before you opose this, let me think it through a bit. I'll be sure to draft my letter with you. Howerver...I am more inclined to suggest the removal of tags. We will still be padawans...but we have nothing to prove with wearing [JAP] on our names :).

Yup not unlike the trackers we have on the server pages..but something much smaller and lighter. Just something that while you browse the forums or read the news, you can see if there is any activity on the servers at a glance. Of course if you wanted to find out WHO was on the server, scores, serversettings, etc, then you would go to that page you linked to me. The little app I'm thinking about would take up very little space.

Well, I'm still formulating my thoughts on what solution I want to propose with the paddy issue, but here is what I think is wrong with the status quo:

There is a huge misunderstanding of what a padawan is. Sure people will tell you that a padawan is nothing more than a student but has an 'official' master...but this is not what people feel. Something that must be accepted is that for everyone, the desire to feel important is present. No one is exempt from this, it is in us all. No one daydreams about being a peasent, we are all the king. There is nothing wrong with this feeling, it is only natural. But it leads to false beliefs about the status of JAP. Why do you think that so many students, despite being told numerous times that getting a master isn't necessary and required, still insist and are driven to get an 'official' master. Even if an unofficial one makes himself available, it is always considered a temporary step - if the student takes the step at all.

The reason for this is because JAPs are seen as something more than a JAS, no matter how much we argue it. JAPs get a tag. The tag may be meaning less...but it is a tag nonetheless. They are the personal student of a Knight. In the minds of all our new students, this fact = status. As much as we hate it, we must accept that this IS what's happening in the JA. Of course you and I konw otherwise, but to the new student...JAP is the way up the ladder. It is a way to start to satisfy that hunger to feel important. And I was just as guilty: when I first joined, I felt like JAPs outranked me. Who could blame me? They had a tag! :P

So now we have students who are striving hard to get a master...some with no regard as to if they like that master, or if that master can teach them anything. Isn't this a waste of both the student's and the master's time?

We can both agree that this is not what was intended by the 'rank' of Padawan. Something needs to be changed.

As for my solution..I am still thinking of this. I have 2 solutions, and they are radically different from eachother; complete 180s in direction.

Well two things I'm plucking at now is the 'Everything You Ever Wanted to Know About a Master' thread, and a little idea for a JA Activities webpage.

Since little inter-JA tourneys seem to be popular, I was experimenting with some PHP code that will help with this stuff. Basically Tourney software that will help organize and plan events here at the JA. I hope to be uploading some tests this week, I'll let ya know and give ya an address when I do. Here is honestly a bad example of what I'm going for.

Another idea I had bouncing around was contacting the USA Clan guy about using his tracker software to provide a 'brief' on the status of all the JA servers. So at a glance you could see the Total # of players on the JA network, what servers have activity, etc. Just would be a cool thing to have on the main page. I was gonna work the bugs outta something like that and submit it to DJ.

Another thing I'm working on is a letter to either Virty or fixtheja about some issues dealing with the 'rank' of Padawan. I won't be making a post about this because the JA is not a democracy and getting a whole bunch of people saying 'yeah this is a great idea, do it' is worthless. Also I hate to make posts that are critical to the JA's policies: it just looks terrible to new students and hurts the moral of the place. I find it is much better to take your concerns to a JAK+, debate it with them, and get them to represent your case to the rest of the JAK+. Almost like a representitive form of administration (kinda gives me an idea for a new post, hmm :P).

That's basically whats floating in my head right now, and I'd love to have your help on anything you want to chip in on.
