You too Vruki. It's been a long time I've noticed you on MSN a few times, but you were 'away' As I said last night; I'm on weekends, but not usually during the week. Quote: What's the difference between ent->s.someThing and ent->client->ps->someThing and ent->playerState.someThing and any other ways to access player state that I might have missed? g_local.h has the answers you seek. (much snipping implied) Quote: struct gentity_s { entityState_t s; // communicated by server to clients playerState_t *playerState; //ptr to playerstate if applicable (for bg ents) struct gclient_s *client; // NULL if not a client }; So, the best place to add values is in playerState. This struct is certain to be communicated each server frame. The other possibility is in userinfos, using trap_SetUserinfo and trap_GetUserinfo. Quote: Also, I was just about to install CVS but since openCVS, the one I want, isn't out yet I'm open to new ideas. Got any suggestions on a source control system that's better than CVS? Preferably one that'll run on OpenBSD but can be accessed from Windows. I personally enjoy CVS, but many people also use Subversion (including cHoSeN-oNe). I'm fairly sure there are Windows clients for both CVS and SVN available. _______________ Saving the world, one kilobyte at a time. This comment was edited by tarpman on Feb 27 2006 12:59am. |

Heh. No problem with being too lazy to write conventionally correct code the first time, as long as you *do* go back and fix it eventually. Anyway, the 'declaring variables in external files' thing I intend to stop using ASAP - mainly because it Just Shouldn't Be Done, but also because including my stuff in the existing ent structs means stuff gets allocated, cleared, and freed automatically. That disclaimer notwithstanding: MAX_CLIENTS is defined in the game code as how many clients the server will accept at once - sv_maxplayers (or whatever the cvar is) can't go higher than MAX_CLIENTS. Therefore, if you need a per-player variable, you can simply declare it as a MAX_CLIENTS-sized array, extern or include it as you prefer, and access it via var[ent->s.clientNum] or var[ent-g_entities] (where ent is a gentity_t* to the player entity you're dealing with). One advantage to this is that its lifetime is what *you* want it to be, as it is set, cleared, etc only when you tell it to. Obviously, this carries its own disadvantage - it won't be cleared (or, in the case of pointers, freed) automatically upon player disconnects or reconnects, only when the game lib is reloaded - for example, on a map change. EDIT: ent->s.clientNum contains the player's client number. It's convenient, but the preferred way of getting a client number when you *know* you're dealing with a player ent is ent-g_entities. This method works because the first MAX_CLIENTS entities in g_entities[] are the player ents. Also, it's slightly faster because there's less arithmetic involved in resolving the memory location - 1 subtraction vs 2 or more additions. _______________ Saving the world, one kilobyte at a time. *like a week later!* Make sure you're putting it in the SHARED entity part, not the game-side part. It's easy to add stuff to g_entities, but only select parts of them get transferred. If you don't mind disorganized code that doesn't get automatically allocated, flushed, and freed, declaring variable[MAX_CLIENTS] arrays in external headers has always worked for me. Most of my existing code is extremely lame and hacky - I'm procrastinating a badly needed re-organizing session. More likely to do a rewrite from scratch, with proper CVSing and all that this time. Moral of the story: don't be like me; clean up your code as soon as it works! _______________ Saving the world, one kilobyte at a time. This comment was edited by tarpman on Feb 25 2006 01:47am. |

I'm quite good at figuring out how to set up game files and such, not on the whole coding/mapping/modelling aspect. My experience with JKA editing is only setting up/modifying skin pk3s. Basically, I can probably help figure out how to make the menus and do all of the little stuff, while you can focus on the coding My last test for a long time is this Wednesday, so this weekend I'll be relatively free. _______________ "Do or do not, there is no try" Jedi Master Yoda Dual Saberist |
