Get Out -Sared - Oct 10 04:05pm
You are here. Therefore, I am going to make a very simple and generalized assumption: you have a problem. How do I figure this? Well, most likely, if you are a normal reader of this section of the site, then you have probably been here for a little while. However, it is my opinion that if you have been here that long, you need a break. Not any of this retirement crap. You just need to go tend to your life; that which matters more than this stupid game. If you feel that in any way you are dependant on this community for your own mental or physical well-being, I don't want you here. People like you remind me of what I used to be like, and it wasn't f#$%ing pretty.

Its a matter of balance. There are several factors involved.

First of which, is how much time you spend here as opposed to how much time you spend doing anything else. Personally, I think someone who spends 20% of thier time here is extremely active. Let me tell you something: we don't need you. The world will not stop spinning if you are not here. Don't get me wrong, we enjoy you being here as much as you do, but you have got to remember that we do this for fun, not because we think that the internet will bluescreen without us.

For that matter, I can only think of a few individuals that the Academy needs in order to function, and that would be DJ_Sith (the webmaster), or Huxley (our server provider). Just take a look at how active they are, and you will see exatly how crucial thier participation in the community is: Not very. We can survive without them for a couple weeks without the universe ending or anything. In fact, I applaude the fact that DJ has not cared more for this place than the rest of his responsibilities. He has been purpousfly inactive as of late, due to a rather insane work schedule, and needed some time off. Did he put up one of those posts saying 'Hey, I'm going to be inactive now!'? No. Neither should you. The JA is something you do with your free time. You hold no obligation to fill us in on every nuance of your life. Nor do you hold any obligation to be here for a set amount of time every day.

Secondly, is the level of seriousness that you handle yourself here with.

Please try to remember for just a moment that this is a internet community. In the grand scheme of things, what you do here does not effect your life. Period. If you become a Knight, big deal. You get banned? So what? Or,(and this is a more recent and direct example) you get banned and your name is slandered left and right in the community. Big f#$%ing deal. Its a game; and whoever worries about thier social status, or the social status of another in a freakin game is fast approaching a point where reality is becoming distorted.

When I log into this site or connect to a server, I expect two things from everyone, and I will say that I am not wrong in doing so. Maturity, and fair play. I do not go to any of our forums or servers looking for a pit of whining, immature children. If I wanted that.....WTF am I saying, I wouldn't ever want that.

This does not not discount the fact that we are here to have fun, and should be so serious that we lose sight of that.

Here is how the rules for posting will work for this article. Put up a simple post, saying something short like "start". Then, shut down your computer and walk away. Go do something else. Anything else. Call a friend, read a book, go for a drive, draw a picture, get into a fight with your sibling. Then, post again an hour or later telling us what you did and how you chose to spend your time.

There, this rant can now be considered complete. Yes, I am writing this in light of recent events. No, I will not mention anyone or anything here. If you have trouble with the views and expressions displayed in this article. Sue me. I'll be outside practicing my Poi.

Um, well, everything you just said in this article besides the Poi (which is very, very cool stuff) describes me Sared! As sad as it may seem, yes, I devote over 50% of my time here at the JA. 30% of the rest goes towards sleeping, another 10% goes towards waching TV, and the last 10% is me taking trips outside to smoke a cigarette. This it because I have absolutely nothing else to do. I no longer have any RL friends, nor do I have a job anymore. So yeah, that's why my life revolves around the JA, and I don't plan on just walking away from it all to get a life just yet ;)

This is a really relevant topic. I hate those posts that people are leaving for good, as if they somehow feel they need to informa us all and make a grand exit. Life goes on after someone leaves. Can't ever say I've noticed the activity change from someone leaving. Its all about the fun, so forget social standing. The JAK+ are here to make things fun and if you leave you only hurt your chances of having fun.

What I said may sound harsh, but in all reality the game will be there when and if you change your mind and return after leaving. Go ahead and take some time off if you had too much JA. I know I do for weeks at a time sometimes. I keep in touch with the people I like to play the game with while I take a break. TS is more to me than just a JA utility. I get the chance to converse with others such as myself who love to play games. People will miss you if you are gone, so keeping in touch is what I'm all about. After you rest, come play and have fun! RL got you down, come play and have fun. TV sucks? We're here for your live entertainment. Always make sure your RL comes first and you'll never feel guilty for being away.

Well, I left for about an hour and 20 min, and had a great time.

First, I turned off my computer and power bar, and decided to head outside. Not sure what to do, I pulled out my skate board and practiced my ollies, and rode around the driveway.

After about 10 min of that, I got my dog and ran with him about a half mile down to the park. While there, I walked down to the river (which goes through the park), where I released some inner boy. I took off my dog's leash, wrapped it up and hooked it to my pants, Indiana Jones style. Then, he and I ran down the side of the river, jumping rock to rock, chasing ducks and whatnot. I admit, I felt a little childish at the time, but I had a lot of fun. Finally, we got to my house again (the river is in my back yard). I climbed up the rocks onto the grass, followed by my—overly excited to be outside—canine companion.

After getting back inside my house, taking my now muddy shoes off, and catching some breath, I got together with my dad and started a game of risk. We now have stopped, and while dinner is being prepared, I decided to come back and finish my post.

I should do this more often.:D

Due to increased RL activity for the last weeks, I'm trying to firmly maintain my class on Tuesdays. It's tough sometimes but it's also a great pleasure to teach. Last week I had a lot of fun doing this. Of course RL is making its own room in my schedule, I started to attend some drawing courses.

I realized I was taking some stuff way too much seriously in here, that when people posted replies I didn't like I felt more or less personally attacked, or got hurt feelings. Then I saw one truth: the JA must only be a fun ground, so if someone disagree with me, though I'll take it seriously, I'll also try not to overreact and tend to read the friendly unspoken feeling in the people's comments.

We're all good people, we don't mean any harm or hurt feelings to any other member, however it can happen but only mutual respect and forgiveness can preserve and maintain and strengthen the friendly atmosphere of the JA.

Peace

On Friday I made some last rounds for work and a few last things here at the JA. Then I turned off my computer and unplugged it, the router, and the dsl modem. I ran through my apartment turning off lights, checking doors, and gave the AC a break. Seeing everything was as I wanted it, I lifted up my pack, checked my boots' laces, and walked outside the door.

A not-so-short drive later I met up with all my friends. We had our last greasy McDonalds breakfast and drove up to the Smokey Mountains in North Carolina. Over the course of the weekend we covered approx. 30 miles of the Appalachian Trail in the area. We had a fun time, some good laughs, and a few wild moments. For the weekend I was completely detatched from school, work, JA, and anything else. I didn't even wear a watch because the last thing I could have cared about was what time it was. Instead I got to know some old friends even better and got to know a new girl I'm dating as well.

Sometimes I realize I AM spending to much time with the JA, and I do exactly what Sared recommends: I turn off the computer. The key is balance and understanding that the JA is a gaming community that isn't worth the trouble/drama a lot of people create here.

Balance keeps my interest in the game up too. I know that if I play JK3 all the time, I will grow sick of it. But the breaks I take refresh my interest in the game, and as I write this I feel a real craving for a duel, or maybe a tag team. Then maybe I'll feel a craving for a movie or planning next month's adventure...who knows? ;)

Good article, I have the same feelings you threw into the article, but with everyone being offended lately with anything anyone does, I posted several articles on the forums. Anywho, I've got a real job I spend 40 hours a week with, I play JA maybe 2 - 4 hours combined in a week, 1 of those hours is definitely in my Saturday class. I get all the enjoyment of living the life of a JA'er in such a small amount of time. I purposely avoid the IRC because that's just time chatting when you can be playing the game, patrolling the servers, having a good time in another game etc and so forth. I post my forum quips and tend to RL first. Although I love games, I love life more, finding the perfect balance and harmony of games/life/friends/family/significant others is an important factor growing up, I feel very fortunate to have found it so early. I KNOW you all can too, just take a seat and think things out. Sared makes very good points above, heed those words....

well, that was fun.

i took out my violin for the first time in weeks, and did something i thought i'd maybe never get around to doing.
I got some music a couple of months ago, 'Devil's Dance,' very hard piece for violin and piano. I actually looked at it critically, and started to teach myself how to play it.

After doing that for a bit i sat down and listened to my brother as he practiced guitar. i offred some criticism and and showed him some songs i wanted him to try.

yes, it was a musical hour :)

i have a blister on my right index finger now, too, because my violin doesn't like to be tuned.
