Christmas-time -JamesF1 - Dec 08 09:48pm | |
Boom! It's that time of the year again... where it gets all cold (for those of you who live on the correct side of the equator) and promises of snow never materialise (for those of you who live within about 20 degrees of the tropics).
I'm talking about Christmas-time - of course. But before I commence, I'm sure that there are a couple of questions some of you are dying to have answered. Questions along the lines of: -- Who is this guy, I've been here two years and I've never heard of him. -- What on earth is *he* doing back here? You get my general drift. Well, I'll answer those two in one fell swoop. I'm me, I've been here a lot longer than you (well, most of you), and I'm only writing this to tide me over until I need to get back to studying discrete probability theory. And you thought there'd be more to it than that? Ha. With all of that lot out of the way, how about I write about Christmas? Well... I'm sure you'll say to yourselves that there's a lot to say that hasn't already been said by everyone else (read: Wikipedia), and in one regard, you're right. However, for some, such as myself, this time of year holds special significance, which can be found in the name of the season - Christmas. This is the time of year when those who believe in Jesus Christ remember His birth - and whether you believe in the Bible or not, this season is definitely one centered around giving thanks for all we, as a society, have and seeing what it is we can offer to others less fortunate than ourselves. So, this Christmas, I'd like to make a suggestion - go out of your way to do something extraordinary to help someone else. Anything from helping an elderly person across the road, to taking a homeless person for breakfast somewhere (they won't bite you... and if you wink the right way, some of them will even follow you home!) - do something that breaks the mould. It doesn't have to be big, but make your life count for something. If hands-on stuff isn't your style, there are plenty of charities and trusts you can support who will make a difference on your behalf - a favourite of mine being FacilitAid(.com - click on the PayPal button to donate) who are doing some great work in providing education in the third-word. But there are many different causes out there, from Help the Aged to TearFund to Oxfam! Take this time of the year to assess your life, take a look at how fortunate you are, not just in monetary terms, but in terms of health, family and social/religious freedoms. Enjoy the holiday, spend time with those you love, and help make the world, and - consequently - The JA, a better place. Joyeux Noël, everyone |
