ATI JA issues

I'm kinda confused about JA. I have a ATI Radeon 9600 with the latest driver(4.9) and the latest direct X.
Now here's the thing: JA actually runs like crap, I mean I get 30 fps most of the time!!! I'm shocked because Far Cry and Unreal Tournament 2004 actually run much better then JA. In JA when I'm on a server with alot of people fighting my fps drops to 20, and when I walk away back to 30. Also when I use force heal my fps drops down to 10 or something.

My specs:
AMD Athlon 2800+
ATI Radeon 9600 series 128 M
256 MB Ram
Phoenix-AwardBIOS V 6.00PG

I've got the 9600XT 128MB too, and get the FPS drop during pushes/pulls, as well as certain areas of KotOR. ATi has JKA and KotOR as "known issues" games, but that's about all for now. Contrary to other people, I suggest getting the newest drivers, and making sure you have plenty of nice fast RAM. In JKA in particular, AA/AF also make huge hits.

I'm currently using the 9600SE, running at optimal settings with a 1024x768 resolution and I haven't noticed this problem. Have you checked you texture rendering settings? What resolution are you using?

*edit* ALthough I doubt it, it might also be a RAM issue. I'm using 512MB DDR by the way but I don't think that's your problem.

The trick to getting Jedi Acadamy running nicely on a Radeon 9600 is to disable two things, First, The annoying bubble effect on push/pull, And Dynamic Glow. Once those are disabled, You will notice a signifigant difference.

I dont know if other people experiance problems with the distort effect on push/pull, But it kills the game on my Radeon 9600 Pro, You can disable that with cg_rendertotexturefx 0 I beleive.

The imoroving your FPS/Ping thread details how to disable Dynamic Glow, Especially usefull if your running JA 1.0, Where it cant be disabled in the More Video options menu.

Hope that helps, Sure helped me, The push/pull effect was a nightmare for me.

I'm having the same problem...i'm gonna switch back to catalyst driver 4.8. When i was using that i was getting like 160 fps all the way. I can't explain why driver 4.9 causes such a drop in fps. It might have something to do with the fact that 4.9 is supposed to be the "Doom 3" driver, so maybe it makes other games worse?

I have a Radeon 9600 too, and the only problem I have is a major, momentary fps drop whenever someone pushes or pulls in my immediate vecinity

Though I have Radeon 9200 SE and it still runs smooth. :) Uninstall your drivers and use Driver Cleaner 3, then install the drivers again. :)

Yup, try reinstalling the drivers.
If the problem still isnt solved, try installing different drivers (IE the beta drivers).

But...maybe you just have FSAA and FSAF enabled?
It lets my FPS drop heavily with both 8xFSAA and 8xFSAF >_>

...i heard that you actually can play Doom3 with 60FPS while 8xFSAA and 8xFSAF enabled...you need the 6800U tho =P

(btw...i have a GeForce FX 5800 Ultra...works fine lol)

Merina, maybe you should try a older catalyst driver. When I run KOTOR it runned like cr*p with the latest drivers, I downloaded some older drivers and it ran smoothly.

LoL I think he's asking for help guys, not what you have :D Well, check this for some FPS tweaking tricks. Other than that, try turning down your video settings so everything is "medium" quality, or even low if you must. :)
