1/3 = 33.3(recurring)%
2/3 = 66.6(recurring)%

What does 3/3 equal? 99.9(recurring)% or because 3/3 = 1 does that mean that 3/3 = 100%?

OR does it mean that 99.9(recurring)% is equal to 100%?

Tell me what you think...

1/3 is NOT equal with 33.3... but its the closest to it, It IS NOT EQUAL :) (my maths teacher explained that quite some times, becuz some ppl just didnt understand it!)

so... 1/3 = 33.3(reccuring) is wrong, it should be written with an "equal sign" with a DOT above it :D

x/x= 1 so if x=3 3/3=1. Anything over itself is 1

To convert fractions to decimal equivalents all one has to do is divide the numerator by the denominator.

1 divided by 3 = 0.333~
2 divided by 3 = 0.666~
3 divided by 3 = 1

To get a percent, multiply by 100

3/3 = 100%
2/3 = 66.666~%
1/3 = 33.333~%

BTW, for the other math nerds, 0.9999999999~ is equivalent to 1 for all intents and purposes. It is a limitation in expressing a fraction as a decimal. It is impossible to properly convert a base 3 number system into a base 10 system without some type of problem as the repeating decimal. Any base number system that does not factor evenly into 10 or a power of ten will have the same problem. :P Visually we know that something divided 3 ways when joined back together will result in a whole assuming there is nothing changing the pieces before being assembled.

lol 1/3 does not equal 33%.. it's 33,33...% with infinite 3's..
The same with 2/3 = 66,66...%
But 3/3 is the whole so that's 100%, how can this be a mathematical problem? :P just makes me wonder..

that's not what we said... we said 0.99999 (1/3 + 1/3 + 1/3) is composed of infinite 9's.

so infinity equals 1? Meaning if the universe is infinite it is only 1 mile long? 1 metere long? 1 inch long? 1 cm long?
I say this because there is no number you can add/subtract/divide/multiply into or by infinity to get anything other than the expression of infinity(mathmatical function here) (said number here). As far as the greatest mathematicians saying that would make something equal to one, is just their wanton disregard for being able to think outside the box, like physics heads saying negative energy is impossible. Human knowledge is at it's height currently, but we still don't know everything, and until more people take it upon themselves to think outside of the box and try to grasp concepts beyond our reach, we are going to be stuck where we are now.

As for something equaling one, that's kind of like the old math trick of walk halfway across a room, then half of that, and then half of that, and so on so forth, theoretically you will never touch the wall, but realistically you can't move your foot 0.0000000000000000000000005 inches, so you will hit the wall. Now, decrese your size by half everytime and you will be stuck.

Well since 3/3 is a whole then 3/3 is equal to 100% of something. 1/3 of something means you have 33% and 2/3 means that you have 66%.

It still isn't. The value of 1 and .999999~ are not identical. But because of the limitations of our ability to process math, we cannot calculate the number needed to prove it.

Ok so practically yes there is no number that you can multiply by .9999~ and get 1 because that number 's right hand side repeats indefinatly and can't be expressed, much like pi. So I stand corrected in the aspect that practically .9999~ is virtually 1, but in infinate math the solution is possible, we just don't have a way to do that yet.

wtf, ok guys, listen up.

1/3 does NOT equal .3333, it equals .3with the 3rds repeating indefinatly. 1/3 equals one divided by three and nothing more. That's all a fraction is, it is something not yet divided.

So 3/3 does not equal .999999whatever. It equals 1. 3/3 is like saying I have 3 parts of a 3 part thing. So therefor I have 1 thing.

And .99999999999whatever does not equal 1. It equals .9999999whatever. There is no shade of grey in numbers. Otherwise if .99999999999whatever = 1, then you could multiply any number by .99999999999 and get the same number.....but you don't!

3/3 = 100%

Yeah I wrote 1/3 = .333 because I didn't feel like writing 231810924892104812084912 pages of 3's :P but .333..33 + .333..33 + .333..33 = .999..99... It *is* so... Anyway, the 9x way is more correct.... And .999 IS equal to 1. Ask in sci.math or w/e the usenet group was.

If a number is not equal to another you must be able to multiply it by something to create that number. This is true for every two numbers not equal.

There is no number you can multiply 0.999~ by to get 1, therefore they must be the same.
