K, here's my guess:
He was a musician or something, and lost his hearing, temporarily I guess. Since he's not able to hear, which would end his music career, he jumps off the building. On his way down, he hears the phone ring and says "Damn!" I still say that mine is a valid answer. It may not be the one the riddle is made for, but it still does fit the criteria for the way the riddle is written. True that Fonz's is right though.
And there is actually two way to do Fonz's. You could remove the second t and have the word starling.
