What is the absolutely _cheapest_ software I can get for making a JK2 character? I mean from scratch, start to finish with a .glm file that I can skin myself and use when I'm done?

I don't think in milkshape you can make models for characters only weapons and items

Ok some retail prices and info for ya.

gmax is free, it's a stripped down version of 3ds max. I hear it's good, but it's limited to saving in the proprietary format for gmax. It's also got no tutorials out there that I know of.

Next up is Milkshape, at 20 dollars for registration. I use milkshape, i like it's interface better than what i have seen of discreet's line (gmax, etc.) I think it's pretty good, especially for the price.

The absolute most expensive piece of software i have ever seen is 3ds Max, at just over 3,000 dollars U.S. It's damned expensive, but it's used for far more than mesh making. Max is used for video editing and animation of cinematic quality. Such scenes as the special effects from star wars, and the sharks from Deep Blue Sea were created with 3DS Max.

Unfortunatly, Bro Da Bl'Lee, downloading that stuff for free is sorta, um, illegal... It's not always a great idea to advertise that sorta thing. -but now I sound like some lawyer, so i'll stop;)

Gmax is a free modeling software. Of course, because of this, its not nearly as good as the costly 3dmax, but I think it's good enough. You can download it from the gmax site, for which I can't remember the URL for at the moment. Just do a search for it and you should get it:)
