Regardless of anyones opinion of who gets promoted fastest this is a good article. Anyone that reads it and wants to join the JA can make there own decision after they've been here a while. In the mean time, great article and great publicity, I hope to get a copy soon. I think the UK Nov issue comes to Australia in Dec. _______________ *CLICKEH->Never risk the Fett Man|*Download my Saber here. It's really a question of cause and effect. The first thing every student of statistics learn is this: Correlation is not the same as causality. In other words, the rooster does not cause the sunrise. If you always smoke a cigar when you drink nineteen tequilla shooters, you should not conclude that cigars cause hangovers. When multiple variables are involved, you can't look at just two and assume one causes the other. In the case of Padawanship, consider this: JAK+ get asked a lot to be somebody's master. We're not always looking, some take lots of Padawans and some take none at all. But generally we're looking for someone with a good attitude and either good skill or a craving to learn that we think will lead to good skill. Guess what? Good attitude and skill are some of the things we look for in a JAK+. Sometimes a known troublemaker--someone who lames people in the courtyard or cusses someone out on IRC--will ask a JAK+ to be his master. Guess what? We're pretty much never interested. And unsurprisingly, those same people are unlikely to be promoted. Now I'm not saying that if you're not a Padawan you're not JAK material. Perish the thought. Just that there is not a straightforward cause/effect relationship between Padawanship/promotion. It's closer to the truth to say that skill/attitude are the causes and that Padawanship/promotion are the effects. I do still believe Padawans have a slight edge simply because the JAK+ get to know their Padawans better than they get to know other students. The same is true, I believe, of people who do IRC a lot. If you're never on IRC, many JAK+ will not get to know you well. And if you're the best Knight material in the world but nobody knows it, well... But don't think those are the only factors. I was a Padawan only briefly, way back in the JK2 days and hadn't been one in a long time when I was promoted (I'm not sure anybody in the ranks even remembers that I was Silk's Padawan). And until my Knight trial I don't think I had ever been on the JA's IRC channel. I do go on from time to time now, but I'll probably never spend a whole lot of time there and will never be one of these guys who just leaves his IRC client running 24/7. In short, if you're JAK material, Padawanship and IRC will help the JAK+ get to know you and maybe get you promoted sooner. Maybe. If you're not JAK+ material, those things will still help the JAK+ get to know you faster, and they'll learn that too. If you want to join the ranks, don't worry about Padawanship or IRC: Worry about your attitude and work on your skill. _______________ My signature is only one line. You're welcome. |

I'd agree that more padawans get promoted, but not that they have more chance. Most active members are somebodys padawan so of course they will be promoted more often... It just says that Padawans get the chance to prove themselves worthy for Knighthood, it doesn't say anything about everyone who isn't a Padawan. I wasn't trying to bash the guy who wrote it. It's just the way I read it, I wanted to clarify it to anyone else who took it the way I did that it isn't the case. ![]() _______________ - Proud padawan of Kueller. - We really are at the beginning of it all. They have the same chance at making Knight as everyone else, and the same chance to prove themselves. Yes, being a Padawan will most likely get you more advanced training than you would get in a class, and yes, you get more guidance on how to be a respectable member of this community or any other. But no, being a Padawan will not get you the chance to take Knight trials any sooner. I dunno, I'd say looking at the results, probability says otherwise. _______________ "Wars do not make one great" |

Quote: Awesome stuff, but I hope they make some editions before it's printed (if it hasn't been already). This is the main thing that caught my eye: Quote: Newer students, can, if the wish, become Padawans of staff members of the site. But no, being a Padawan will not get you the chance to take Knight trials any sooner. That sentence, among a number of spelling and punctuation errors were the things that I had a problem with. Other than that, it's an awesome article that will bring us lots of attention. Hurray for the JA! ![]() Must be me, but I don't see them saying Padawans have a higher chance of becoming a Knight than others, they just state they can try to prove themselves worthy. |
