Can anyone enlighten me and explain why servers r running on limited slot numbers now ? WP on 11 instead of 16, american ones on 27 instead of 32...

Does it have to do with server instability when many users r on ? High bandwidth usage ? If so, changin server max rate settings should do the trick.

Buzz: it is. But what good is that if the bot is net split as one of e.g. 3 people? The rest of the channel would still be locked.

And I'd advice people not to overestimate the "threat" of a flood join... they happen very rarely, extra rarely when the channel is less than ~200 people.

Is it possible for the bot to detect that a netsplit has occured and it will not adjust the limit for a minimum of 10 minutes after the split occurred

the way we fixed the last one was for me to sneak into the channel through a backdoor and change the L limit manually... so it's not a TOTAL disaster if Tido's smelly bot gets booted, just a minor one

I'm working on a solution to that issue with the bot. It shouldn't happen unless we get massive netsplits like we did that night.

Each IRC channel can have a limit (l) to the # of clients in a channel. The bot takes the number of people in the channel and adds 5 to that number, then uses that to set the limit. It updates on every 2 joins or parts. The reason we have this is to prevent a type of attack where massive numbers of floodbots enter your channel (and I'm talking between dozens and hundreds), and start to flood out your channel. The bot protects us from that because now only 5 people can join the channel at any one instant.

Here is when the code comes back to haunt us:
Lets say we have 60 people in our channel, and then there is a netsplit. Now lets say the channel has only 20 people in it. After a short while the bot will set the l to 25. Then lets say the bot gets disconnected in a netsplit. Now the bot is no longer there to regulate the l value, and the channel is stuck at 25. It can't be fixed until the bot returns - which it can't, its locked out by its own l value.

The other problem if say 40 people get split, and then the bot sets a new l, those 40 people can't just rejoin. They will have to wait for the l value to slowly correct itself.

I'm trying to find a solution to this problem. One of the ideas is to have an l override - this is where an admin can enter a command that sets a manual l #, or turn l off completely. The problem with this is it's pointless if the bot got split from the channel.

The other idea is to not have l at all in our channel, and instead have some kind of 'emergency lockdown mode'. If this is enabled, the bot will lock out the channel from new people entering, moderate the channel (mute all non-voiced users), and voice all admins. The problem with this is that if we do get a botnet flood, some admin has to be quick enough to catch it happening and enable the lockdown. So I'm not really sure if I'm crazy about that idea either.

IRC is fine the bot sets limits to stop join/part flood from botnetworks and such. We only had a limit problem when quakenet had a hick up and the bot wasn't in the channel to fix limits.

Each Server has five private slots by default, so the JA Home server will read 27(32) and stuff.

I do plan on changing this though, all I need to do is add one cvar to the cfg file.

The servers config files were cleaned, so things may have messed up a little.
