Well, I just got back from seeing half of it. I, as well as all of my five friends that had come with me to see it, had thought the movie was just terrible.

The acting was wayyy to overdramatic, it just didn't make you want to believe. Everyone in the audience had been laughing when a person died, not really crying or being sad.

If you've seen the movie, what did you think about it?

Well from what I understand, Alexander's father puts Catholic Priests in America to shame. If that portion of real history is true.

I actually heard that some people wanted to blame the bombing of this movie, not on how crappy it is but because red state america is so homophobic that they won't watch the movie. This is someone saying that the movie blows altogether but it won't make any money because they make reference to Alexander being bisexual. Isn't that slightly counterintuitive since a TV show like Will and Grace is widely popular.

I've read a few commentaries on it by experts on ancient history, and they all agree the history is completely bastardized, even to the point where the chronology doesn't work (characters appear on screen many years after they died, for example). This is par for the course with Oliver Stone, but I used to think he just rewrote recent history to fit his own political agenda. Apparently not. It looks like he just compulsively rewrites history.

One historian remarked that, although the history is botched, he did feel that the film had some good insight into Alexander's personality. For me, that hardly makes up for the film's other problems.

Alexander was most almost certainly bisexual, based on the actual manuscripts from his time. He was a complicated guy. You'd have to be complicated to conquer the whole world (as you knew it) and then weep that there are no more worlds to conquer. Jeez, what a complex.

I thought it was horrible. Alexander was a great military strategist, but they never really showed it. I thought they made him look like an idiot. And the guy conquered most of the known world, and there were only 2-3 battle scenes in the whole movie.

If you want to know about Alexander watch the history channel special on him. It was alot better. ;)

I was pointed to this thread, and, as I saw the movie yesterday, and since I'm Greek, I feel obliged to reply:

Sure, Alexander the Great might have been slightly gay (as many ancient greeks were, but I don't have the time right now to go into details), but what they showed in that movie, makes him look like he's the president of the gay association. Personally, I feel offended by that movie. And many fellow Greeks were.

As for the rest, the movie wasn't always compatible with the history, but in most parts it was. Sure, it was a movie, it needed some extra drama.

Just like with Troy, if you decide to go watch this movie, don't believe that all you see is true (i.e. conforming to the real story).
