These are the only examples I could find on such short notice of this country's war fervor and President worship going too far. What's wrong with expressing your opinions on political events? From what a know of the law (and I'm not a lawyer, so take all this with a grain of salt) your speech is protected, but your actions aren't. That's fine with me. So what's up with these facists jailing people for their opinion? Gah I can't even think straight now. Up yours John Ashcroft.Look what you and the President have turned this country into.

That would only be right if that one guard were a general bufoon at his job or had other problems on his record. If not then follow the company rules he signed with. If he made a mistake fine, but he shouldnt be signaled out for what he did.

Just pointing out that even what is seen as an almost exclusively conservative republican gun-ho for war news channel thought that it was dumb.

Was watching Fox News and they had an update on the man in the mall. They thought it was wrong that he was arrested to start off with. The charges against him have been dropped. And the guard that caused the incident was fired. Now ask yourself this, if this is the only thing the guard did, just one mistake, does that warrant firing him? It wasn't right to arrest the man and its not right to fire the security guard either.

I'm not sure that teens are particularly malevolent creatures (I do recall being one, all those four years ago :p) I just think that by the age of 15, everyone has had cynicism beaten into them by society.

Teenagers are particularly cruel, but as mentioned on another thread, evil is a complete lack of empathy with your common man. From where I'm standing, most people in this world have become mind-bogglingly apathetic consumers.

Two pithy comments spring to mind about freedom of speech and the treatment of supposedly culpable 'minorities'

'However much I disagree with what you have to say, I will defend unto death your right to say it' Voltaire

'First they came for the handicapped, and I did nothing, for I was not handicapped. Then they came for the gypsies, and I did nothing, for I was not a gypsy. Then they came for the Jews, and I did nothing, for I was not a Jew. Then they came for me, and there was no-one left to do anything for me.' Pastor Niemueller.

Is it just me, or has the academy started to reflect the sadness that seems to have overtaken the world?

Remember, a single human being can be taken as a microcosm for the whole of humanity, and when a single human being is sad; something is wrong.

Take it easy

i just want to back fizz's recommendation to watch "Bowling for Columbine".

i just saw it and i agree, it's good. watch it! now! j/k :)

as for these two cases... the articles seem waaaaaayy too short. methinks they are not giving us all the facts. but if indeed that is all there is to say about those two incidents, then i think there shouldn't have been anyhting at all. arresting someone for a shirt seems stupid to me even if it has Heavy Metal lyrics printed on it. :P

Well, the guy in the mall story sounds skewed to me. I don't think the entire truth has been told there.

As for the kid going to school with something like that on, it's just sounds like another kid with a monumental lack of respect for himself and the world around him. Typical american kid it seems like.

As for running around yelling Heil Hitler, you can be arrested for that under certain circumstances. Most of the time though, yer right, and it sucks.

Buzz I agree that there should be certain restrictions for things like strip clubs and dance clubs and stuff because theres the potential for abuse there. If this news report is true, then this guy was just jailed for his political opinion. Now if it's the case that he was trying to force his beliefs onto others then sure take action against him, but not for just wearing the shirt.

This is the enviornment created by govt FUD campaigns. Alot of FUD lately.. :(

Oh so there's a chance that the guy was there bugging people about his tree-hugging hippy views eh? If that's the truth in the story then its a little bit more understandable. Most malls wouldn't allow that to go on. Probably wouldn't surprise me either, most news programs are on the liberal side and would love to do something like that, and fox news is about 2 steps from being ultra conservative so the truth probably lies somewhere in the middle of the "facts".

The guy in the mall I think was harrassing people as well, according to FoxNews. If he was, then OK, but if he was just sitting there wearing his shirt, that's ridiculous.
The other article didn't say whether his parents saw him walk out the door with the shirt on or not. That's not really the best shirt to be wearing though.

Well I think I agree with the suspension of the kid. Frankly his parents seem stupid for letting him do that. There's a point between common sense and stupidity. He should have made a shirt that said "not all arabs are terrorists" That shirt could definitely be taken two ways. The man arrested in the mall is just stupid. He does have the right to wear the shirt. The mall is a private place and they can enforce some type of dress code there. They're morons for doing it that way. I could understand a shirt promoting drug use or very lewd conduct but not a peace shirt. They can enforce a policy such as this though. My sister's fiance didn't go into a strip club once because he had a harley davidson shirt on. He would have had to either turn it inside out or buy one of the stupid shirts there. That is just an example that on private property you can enforce a dress code. They're still morons for doing it for a peace shirt.
