I was bored so I thought, I know I'll make a poll about your favourite Lord of the Rings scenes from the movie.

So just write what your favourite scene is, and later i'll narrow the most popular ones down to 5, and do an option poll.

Thanks,

Scythus

Seeing as they are friends, and Legolas was worried about Gimli (see The Two Towers book), he would accept it :P

Eh? They do meet in the book, during the Siege of Minas Tirith.

Quote:
Thrice he cried. Thrice the great ram boomed. And suddenly upon the last stroke the Gate of Gondor broke. As if stricken by some blasting spell it burst asunder: there was a flash of searing lightning, and the doors tumbled in riven fragments to the ground.

In rode the Lord of the Nazgûl. A great black shape against the fires beyond he loomed up, grown to a vast menace of despair. In rode the Lord of the Nazgûl, under the archway that no enemy ever yet had passed, and all fled before his face.
All save one. There waiting, silent and still in the space before the Gate, sat Gandalf upon Shadowfax: Shadowfax who alone among the free horses of the earth endured the terror, unmoving, steadfast as a graven image in Rath Dínen.
"You cannot enter here," said Gandalf, and the huge shadow halted. "Go back to the abyss prepared for you! Go back! Fall into the nothingness that awaits you and your Master. Go!"
The Black Rider flung back his hood, and behold! he had a kringly crown; and yet upon no head visible was it set. The red fires shone between it and the mantled shoulders vast and dark. From a mouth unseen there came a deadly laughter.
"Old fool!" he said. "Old fool! This is my hour. Do you not know Death when you see it? Die now and curse in vain!" And with that he lifted high his sword and flames ran down the blade.

- The Lord of the Rings: Return of the King, pages 810-811 (pub. Collins).

I believe Gandalf at some point speaks about the Nazgûl Lord's skill level, and it being close to his own, or even better (though I may be mixing up movie and book, can't remember).

PS: You better appreciate the effort it took for me to type up that page! :P

Yes, they never met in the book, but why would he own Gandalf?
He's no Maia last time I look, but Gandalf is. And come on, with those nifty new powers, he should kick their (The Nazgûl) butt :P

Yeah I agree.
When I was at the cinema, and I saw the Elves appear, I litterally swore "wtf", only not the letters, but the actual words :P

I personally loved Gandalf, even though he lost to the Witch King, I hear. I'm reluctant to watch ROTK Extended because I'll get annoyed at this scene.
Also, in the cinematic version of ROTK they cut out way too much. I actually looked forward to the power "struggle" between Gandalf and Saruman. No dice though :(

What I particularly hated about the movies was Legolas, being über-cool and all. I mean come on. He isn't like that in the books. I've always thought of him to be more mysterious in stead of all cool and quick, etc

You know, when I saw the Elves appear at Helm's Deep, I actually expected to see hundreds of Legolasses, but instead we got wimps who were owned in 3 minutes.
... What was that about? They aren't just freaking Elves, they are the guardians of Lothlórien, seeing plenty of battle at the borders, or am I terribly mistaken on this?

The extended scene in TTT where Gimly is sitting on a dead Uruk-Hai, was plain ridiculous. They screwed Legolas over in that part, where they made him appear as someone who can't take his loss, even though he says it himself in the book TTT, that he didn't mind Gimli winning.

Anyway, all in all, I like the movies. Some things are great, some are not.
The trailer showed Aragorn doing his speech in an almost perfect way. Compare the trailer to the speech he gave at Mordor. Totally different. Totally different. I mean come on ... That didn't sound too great at all at the gates of Mordor. It could have been better.

your views all?

LOTR The Two Towers: After the battle for helm's deep, gimli is sitting on an urukhai......cant be bothered to type it so watch the extended dvd :P
Oh and do i have permission to beat cas senseless? LOTR rawks n the actors of the free peoples outshined the evil (considering Sir Ian McKellen has been acting for at least 50 yrs)

Aye, LotR _does_ rawk, but now I'm talking about the literature that Tolkien created. I've been obsessed with the story since my ma first read it to me and my brothers when we were four years old or something. So I've created a kind of obsessive-possessive relationship with the novels. And that's why I didn't find the movies even close to the standards I had set in my mind. I mean face it, when you have approximately 1000 pages of writing, a plethora of characters, locations, dialogues, and events, PLUS you have an enormous mythology created to support the trilogy (if you're thinking only of Silmarillion, there's more, there's so much more and not only in literature (Histories of Middle-Earth etc.) but also in Tolkien's legacy that lives in the fans' minds who keep on creating the mythology), so it would be nigh impossible to create a movie that satisfies everyone with all that looming in the background.

I have the extended editions on DVD, and I enjoy watching them over every now and then. The movie _was_ good, audiovisually and some of the actors were great (I didn't take a swipe at MacKellan, I love the guy's acting skills) and some of them weren't. For example, Aragorn could have been a great character and he could have been acted well by Viggo had he been written well. The stupid love story (that belongs in the Appendices, you know, the stuff that you cut out when you have a sore stomach) just took the edge out of his blade. And also some liberties the writers took on his characterisation (like the disappearance of him after the battle with the Wargs en route to Helm's Deep.. WHAT WAS THAT ALL ABOUT?!).

When I saw the movie trilogy, I beat my self for having read the books a gazillion times, since I know my attitude was very snobbish when I watched the movies. But they were _good_, really good. But this monologue that I'm writing (for some godforsaken reason) is just person's point of view.

I have no idea what compelled me to write this and miss my bus to work, maybe it started off as a retort to Raziel asking for permission to beat me up (I warn you, I have no sense of humour in the mornings), or maybe it was the result of a crazy dream that I saw last night, and I still haven't woken up.

Indeed....I've seen LotR on DVD multiple times, and I still like watching it....but the scenes with Frodo/Sam/Gollum in it go into Fast Forward, god I hate those scenes.

And I disliked the scenes with Treabeard in TTT aswell...*yawn*

Eowyn cutting the Mumakills legs so it falls down was just hilarious....the Mumakill shouldn't even get scratched by such a small weapon.

Legolas' scenes are nice, but mostly because of Gimli's responses like "That still only counts as one"

I loved the speech from Aragorn at the Black Gate and Theodon's speech at the fields of Pelennor.

Moments were Gandalf uses his powers...when he rides out of Minas Tirith against the Nazgul, in Fangorn when he blocks Aragorn, Legolas and Gimli's weapons, and when he frees Theodon from Saruman.

Balrog scene owned aswell :D

The movie was visually most impressive. My favourite scenes include:

-The Argonnath (statues of the kings as the fellowship moves up the river Anduin in FotR).
-the schitzophrenia of Gollum (though I didn't like it in terms of dramatisation, it was very well done in the movie with the cut-sequences. In the books the division in Gollum's mind is more hierarchial, ie. he is good and evil at the same time, not in the dual sense of one rather than other. It is more a question of conscience than of insanity in the books IMO).
-Lothlorien, especially the scene where the king and the queen walk down the stairs. A beautiful place. But again, I wasn't entirely satisfied with Cate Blanchett as Galadriel (Cate is beautiful, but not _beautiful enough_ to represent an elf queen who has been around since the dawn of time and who has dwelt in the Undying lands. I expected something much much more radiant and breath-taking).
-Mouth of Sauron was cool. But yet again, it was said that the Mouth could speak in words that no one can resist. When compared to this, his voice wasn't persuasive enough, sure, he had a good dialogue but Christopher Lee as Saruman portrays a far more powerful and awe-inspiring use of vocal cords.
-The eagles arriving to pick Sam and Frodo. Very nice scene.

My altogether favourite scenes:

Most Faithful Adaption From Book To Movie And An Insanely Cool Scene Too: The ambush at weathertop.

Visual Mastery: The awakening of Minas Morgul (the pillar of light to the sky and the split-second silence before the growl).

I have to agree with Ulic that I disliked all scenes with Sam and Frodo (I can't stand the drooping puppy-dog look that Frodo does all the time.). Also, I hated every single large-scale battle, sure they were grand and enormous, but I thought they were spoiled with stupid little details, like Legolas attacking the Mumakil, Eowyn slashing the possibly 5 inch thick ankleskin of one of the beasts and making it fall down. Actually, Eowyn sucked. As did Arwen. Too much focus on Arwen, too too much. Where was Glorfindel who should have been the one to raise the flood at the ford of rivendell? Ffs. Talk about taking liberties.

I missed Tom Bombadil and Scourging of the Shire. But dramatically, they would have been terribly anticlimatic. Just imagine, a huge battle at the black gate, the destruction of the ring, the crowning of Elessar Telcontar, and then whoosh a whole new plotline where the hobbits save Shire. No way Jose. Same thing about Tom Bombadil. It would have really shifted the focus away from the linearity that was preferred for the movie plot. And I thoroughly understand it. Besides Tom Bombadil is just utterly the coolest hippie in Middle-Earth, I'd hate to have it spoiled by some mediocre Ben Stiller -lookalike hopping around in tights.

Great movie trilogy. Mediocre adaption from the books. Poor protagonist cast (all the bad guys were great, but most of the actors portraying the free people just sucked).

actually, I understand why they skipped him.
1) no real impact on the story like Gandalf, or whoever
2) not enough time. Moves are long enough as they are :P (though I myself wouldn't mind)
3) who will have bad critics for the movie, if it contains a man with a beard, dressed in green, blue and yellow, who sings all the time, etc etc etc ...? Too bad, that would be a lot of people who would rate this as a bad movie :)
