I played it on a fresh win2000 install with just gfx drivers. there was DX7 or 8, i donno. but not 9, which JK3 claims to need during install. of course installer refused to run, but it worked fine when i started jamp manually. Because the installer is retarded. You all know the infamous "Unable to initialize OpenGL subsystem" error, dont you ?  It may use parts of the DirectX framework (orion ?) but it definetly does not use Direct3D. anywho. Ian: does SP work ? meh. all you directX folks. once and for all: "Jedi Knight games do not use directX." ok, now in all calm: you seem to have a SiS chipset/mainboard. These are well known to have problems with OpenGL games. Try to grab the newest graphics driver from SiS or whatever your OEM is. But I doubt there is decent OpenGL support. It's not the patch, it's the MP console. Make sure you have the latest DirectX drivers, and make sure your video card drivers are up to date too. Whenever I got that problem, those always fixed it. However, It could very well be a different error than what I had, so give the driver updates a try first.
