I'm going to make this very clear due to a few instances I've noticed. You are allowed to wear your clan tags here at the academy. If someone asks you what clan you're in, you can even give them the website.

You are however forbidden from recruiting on our servers. This is not the place to ask people to join and become members of your clan. Its clearly stated in the rules without question. To anyone who thinks they are "getting away with it" in private messages or by doing it in a language other than English, you are wrong.

If you don't want to get in trouble the solution is quite simple. DON'T RECRUIT ON OUR SERVERS FORUMS OR IRC CHANNELS.

Squib pretty much hit the nail on the head. We do not like recruiting of any kind. And if someone were to acctually recruit in such a way they would be in trouble. The familes are just another aspect of getting a real "feel" of a jedi spirit. You are part of a family if you become a padawan of one of it's members. And that makes it not like recruiting.

Ahh, I misunderstood, sorry Squib. I agree that actually hunting for "family members" on the server shouldn't be allowed. Although, as far as the difference between families and clans go, i'd say the key difference is competitiveness. Clans go out, and have matches with other people. Families tend to keep to themselves in that respect. This is purely from observation though, i've never been deeply involved with the family thing, except a very short stint in the D'Kana family. :P

You missed out the "For these purposes part. There is a difference between a clan and a family as you stated...

It's just a group of friends. I've never seen family matches, or family servers before.

However For the purposes of recruiting at the JA both are equally not allowed.

The Belouves for example are a family not a clan, however if i were to go around on the servers shouting

"APPLY TO JOIN THE BELOUVES NOW AT www.......com"

It wouldn't be allowed. Belouves dont do "tournements" nor have "Belouve servers". so in that respect belouves are not a clan, however it still is not allowed for us to recruit (not that I ever would do that of course, calm down Ulic)

The JA obviously encourages the family thing... I mean, there's even family webpages hosted on JA webspace.

Agreed but those family webpages are JA families. I dont think (not positive on this) that a group that is a family but with members not drawn from the JA would get thier site hosted.

Just wondering, what defines a family as opposed to a clan?

IMO there is a differece but what is it?

Not taking part in "Clan wars" or tournements and the like.
Not having thier own servers?
Not having a ranking system (see below)
Being bulit up by master-padawan relation ships? (obviously those who were the original "masters" would have greater authority but no official rank)

Any of those? All of those? Some i didn't mention ?

I think it's pretty simple. Call it a clan, or call it a family, it doesn't matter. Yes there is a difference. But no matter what you call it, it's about how you go about the business of it. To go on a server or the website and say "Hey, anyone who wants to join my clan/family, come get recruited!" is obviously against the rules. However thats not how a family usually works. Usually a family is a padawan (official or otherwise) taking on the name of their master as a sign of respect and of lineage. Similar to adding a JAP tag for official padawans who choose to do so.

So whatever you call it, it's what you do that determines if it's clan recruiting and against the rules. We just want to keep the academy a happy and stress-free place for everyone. Well, thats what I think anyway. :P

Yes maybe the Academys definition of Family and Clan should be made clear to everyone in the rules so theres no confusion.

Family = A group of friends who have a common link (ie master/padawan)in the Jedi Academy.

Clan = A group of friends who train and fight together on there own server or public/clan servers.

This is my definition, but maybe something like it could be added to the rules. :)

I disagree with the family = clan thing. It's just a group of friends. I've never seen family matches, or family servers before. The JA obviously encourages the family thing... I mean, there's even family webpages hosted on JA webspace. Families and Clans are a totally different thing, in my opinion. Then again, it IS a matter of opinion. :)

Also just as a side note...

Family - Clan = same thing for these purposes

I heard someone use the fact they were a family and not a clan as a way to explain why it was ok, which im pretty sure isnt a valid excuse (Right ?)
