What you saw on Mythbusters was a discussion of whether the ancient Greeks used such a device to burn up their enemies ships, which was not at all the same question. The problem is that the ships of the Greeks' enemies would be some distance away, and the energy would attenuate rapidly. But the SDR is essentially a parabolic reflecting lens, and it does indeed increase the intensity of the light by concentrating it at a single point, as any other such lens would do. The the Greek's enemies had attacked them with a tiny ship that could actually be stuck in the mounting bracket of the SDR, they could have burned it up. Hehe...I just looked at the picture on the page, didn't even bother reading into it. This "deathray" used the fresnel theory of refraction, which basically can take a small point of light and expand it into a large pool of light. It doesn't really change the intensity of the light, even if that large pool is then somehow shrunk back down into a single ray of light again. I saw them try this on Mythbusters and it didn't work. Sorry to burst anyones bubble, but it is funny to see them try  *edit* well, I checked out some more of the page, looks like you can melt chocolate and stuff with this thing, but i doubt it could even set a piece of wood on fire. _______________ Be at peace, and you will discover things you never dreamed possible.
