If the JAK tag was given for the amount of time you've been a member, half the JA would have the title and it would be pointless.

By now, with all previous comments, I'm sure you see why you are not a JAK yet. Ask yourself the right questions:
- Why would you want to be a JAK?
- What kind of asset can you bring to the community?
- Are you ready to give away your free time to help run the community ?
- What's more important: being honored or being helpful?
- etc.

I suggest you read the "Being a JAK+" thread and have a look at that article I wrote about being an admin.
Most people here will tell you that it isn't recommended to ask for a promotion, and they're right. The motivation you display is great, but make sure its source is the right one (ie, NOT ambition alone).

Now the road to JAK+ positions is a secret one, but it always involves some kind of freely-given dedication, without a thought of a reward. Because for a JAK+, the best reward is the satisfaction of keeping this place a haven for all players, a place of friendship, respect and learning.

I'm going to say something that will maybe appear strange for some of you ;)

I will compare this to politics. They are many types of politicians. Some are ambitious, some others are searching recognition, some others need more power to influence their trade competitors and finally some come in politics to do their best for the citizens. A constant in human behavior is that the same profiles are existing in all communities. It's not dependent from the size of a community. So here at the JA we've those profiles as well.

I think the JA ranking system is pretty well built to have a majority of ranked members targeting citizens needs (so players needs). Now if you're really committed to people needs and no other force drives you, it's already a good start. But it will take time for current ranked members to know and trust you :)

Oh and be careful becoming JAK+ will involve you as much as being member from a RL society committee. You've a little bit the same advantages & disadvantages (ie. honor and respect from your peers but a lot of work to do, problems to solve and concerns will be yours).

I hope this will help,

A library... like the holocron? :P
(EDIT: Ah HW already said that, my bad)

No actually. There is a 'staff' position for those who are helping out, but not a Knight.

Being a knight isn't a rank. It is an admin position. Please be sure that you don't want prestigue and do want to help this community before you go knight-crazy.

If your too impatient to wait then how can the councile expect you to be patiant with your padawans and students, this is why they take so long to choose JAK, becuase "with great power comes great responsibility" ( Yea I know lame :P)

I think Kenyon nailed it. If you're looking to become a Knight for yourself, then you're not what the JA needs. Ranked members have to give up a lot of the freedoms they enjoyed as students. Having admin abilities and a few new forums doesn't really make up for it.

If you were a knight, what you do in the JA would be very different than what you do as a student. You would have very little time to yourself; people would be requesting things of you every moment you are on the servers, irc, or the website. You can never fully relax on a server and have fun. You must always stay keen to what's going on and make sure everything is as it should be. And if things are out of hand, you have to deal with it. This can take alot of time...that's time you are not out having fun.

The JAK tag makes you a target. Now everytime you enter into a duel it will be hard to relax. Every student in the JA will want to test themselves against you. So basically the quality and fighting credibility of the Knights can depend on that duel. If you have a bad day, there are some (not many) students that will never let you forget it.

Students will be seeking your instruction every day. If you do not truly love teaching being a Knight can be hell. If you teach classes you will always be working against students who are determind to interrupt you or prove themselves. Having to sleep, silence, and especially kick someone is NOT fun.

I'm just touching the tip of the iceberg about how rough being a Knight can be. The point I'm trying to make is do not pursue Knighthood for yourself. First off the JA is great at detecting that in people and you'll just spend forever wasting your time. Secondly if you did become a Knight, you would lose interest quickly and not fulfill your duties. Then the JA has spent a considerable amount of time in making you a Knight only to have it all go away.

The only thing that makes it all worthwhile is knowing that you are making it better for everyone else. Being able to look at the JA and see everyone enjoying themselves because of the hard work of you and the other ranked members makes it all worth it. The JA is a great community and a ton of fun. You'll get a lot out of it because of the folks who are putting so much back in to it.

The most obvious question is: Why do you want to become a Knight? Obviously you can help and train your fellow students while being a student yourself. A lame answer but very true. From experience, I know that a lot (though not all) of the people asking for Knighthood were trying to receive status within our organisation.

Now, everywhere on this site and forums you will see that our current ranked members definitely have status - but they don't have status because of their rank, they earned their rank because of their status. Their status, or reputation, was deserved because of their actions and behavior.

Of course, you don't need a rank to be well known - some of the best known people in our community, "Academy celebrities", if you will, are just students like you and me. In fact, I love being a student. I don't want to become a ranked member. People sometimes come to me for help because they've duelled me on the servers, and I'm always glad to help people out. Sometimes I even helped a group of people - kind of like a class.

Trust me, I've been a JAK - there's a reason why the JAK are saying being a JAK is serious business - it is. There are lot of disadvantadges to the position. It's more of a responsibility than a badge of honor.

What I'm trying to say is, the people who're ranked now were well known before they got their rank, not because they got it. And here's the problem - if you go around helping people, being nice and skilled and all that to get a JAK, you're not really worthy of the title. All you're doing is being very ambitious, and even though you're aiming for that position with a smile on your face, you're still aiming for a position to get recognition, which means you still got things messed up in your head. ;)

So, as Gradius said, don't. Just don't want it. It'll come naturally, like an extension of your Academy career, but it shouldn't be a goal. Stick to the grounds, grasshopper!

We don't pick people who are going out of their way to try to get noticed. We pick people who are always on the servers, posting of the forums, IRC, etc., and don't let on that they want to be Knights too often. Don't get me wrong, it's awesome if someone wants to be one, that's what we want. But we don't want people who only do these things because they are trying to get ranked up. We'd prefer if you were naturally what we call "Knight material."

The key to becoming a Knight, is to stop trying to. :)

It takes a long while man, and someone high up has to think you are, it doesn't matter if you think your ready. You have to prove your ready, and I believe virtue's permanant post explains it well. Plenty of people have been here a long time, but you need to add something to the community.
