Lack of Interest Killed the Radio Star

Well it just seemed like such a cool idea at the time. We had the buzzing forums, the active IRC chatroom, and our array of busy servers. Why not a radio station? It was going to be another medium that made this community unique. I once heard DJ Sith comment about how many logins the site gets in a day. It was an impressive number. Not to mention our servers have people in it most hours of the day. I knew we had a community large enough to enjoy a small online radio. I had already been listening to internet radio while enjoying jk3. Despite having a good sized music collection, I would get tired of it. Internet radio would fill the void for me. The problem is most internet radio stations aren't very good :(. The concept of our own station just screamed at me. But JA Radio isn't panning out like I hoped it would...

Flash forward to May '05. We have a radio set up with the awesome Ogg Vorbis encoding. We have a good set of DJs, a schedule, and even a spiffy 'On-Air' indicator on the website. Everything should be rocking....but it isn't. The DJs seldom get more than just a couple of listeners with some doing their whole shows and getting none. From an otherwise active community, the response has been depressing. Is the community too small to have this? Is the community declining? Does the music suck? Do the DJs suck? I really don't know how to fix it.

Some of the DJs are removing their shows from the schedules. I can't say I blame them. Being a DJ isn't an idle process - you have to sit there and organize it. It takes time from your day. Doing all that work for an audience of 0 isn't very appealing. These guys do great shows and really open up my horizions to new music. I really enjoy listening to what people across the world enjoy. But it's like I'm the only one most of the time :(. What is even more pathetic is how some JA members turn on their mIRC mp3 announcers just in spite of the DJ. What a jackass thing to do.

I really don't know what there is left to do. JA Radio was a neat idea, and I don't want to just abandon it. But if the JA is not interested in it, what's the point? If we have missed anything please post here your ideas.

I've resigned my scheduled shows for now... I'm way busy with school lately and I'm not gonna plan my homework around 2 evenings a week for 0 listeners...
Now I will do some random shows on the spot every now and then... and maybe when I finally get summer holiday I will pick up my shows again...

Well, I only discovered the JA radio feww weeks ago, and since that, I always check if it is on or off air. Sincerely, I loved the shows, just couldn't always be active in the #ja-radio...
Keep it up guys, it has to be run on several months to get people to know it and enjoy the shows :)

BTW, DJ_Roan, you rocked that evening!!! Madness rules :P

So rather than have the radio based pretty much on just music, have more chat type shows, or games or whatever like Roan and Virtue do, something to give it more of an academy feel.

i think the same...
djs either make variety or cut off some music of their shows.
but if they do that... what would we get?
and after all these things done there is a thing tido questened us : whats the point? if noone is listening...

People use WMP? :O

I thought that one half of the people used Winamp, and the other half used Foobar. :)

Edit: btw, anytime I am behind my pc, doing this or that, I check if there is radio, and if there is, I listen to it. ^^

You mean like a client side thing for JK3? Have it so people can select JA Radio as a music source? And also have kill and death info? Omg brilliant! :D

Oooo oooo, what about a client side right click on the scores menu admin? Bah I'm getting off topic :P.

Hey hey, my music rocks. and I do have a wide collection, from some top40 stuff, like audioslave, they rock...to the stuff you will never hear on a radio ever..like opeth, slayer, kreator, and cradle of filth.. :P

But yeah clear channels sucks..and yes Ogg rocks for lowquailty streams, thats where ogg really shins is with low bitrate files, it out performs mp3 there.

rofl, yeah, metallica are evil :P [/me hides from flame attacks]

i think a large problem is, out of the regular community here, the music taste is extremely varied. even with a desire to hear new things, there will be a finite number of listeners. add this to timezone differences, awkward times (possibly) and the radio lagging some games, in addition to not working for others, accessibility is a large problem.

now, were the radio to play via a plugin, this may well solve some of the accessibility problem, alternatively if shows looped on a cycle, we could test how many people WOULD listen IF the shows were more accessible to them.

those are just a couple of my thoughts on it, rather than a criticism or complaint directed anywhere ;)

1) I didn't know there was an Ogg plugin for WMP... thanks Tido for posting that.

2) Radio is rarely on when I am (which is rare enough itself).

3) I've browsed a few DJs' playlists, and most of it is stuff that I dislike, if not utterly despise. Add some Coltrane to your playlists, and I'll be there like a shot. ;)

Anyway, enough bad excuses from me. I'll try to listen in more often.

Much like Orion and Aron, I've never cared for mainstream radio. I hate ClearChannel and what they are doing to radio in the US. But I get tired of my own music. I have gigabytes and gigabytes of stuff, yet it never keeps me interested for long. I love hearing new stuff or things I never thought of getting, and internet radio gives that to me.

Orion is a special case in that some of his music is so far off the radar for most people that it would be disasterous for JA Radio to play it.

Why would Ogg Vorbis be a problem?

Well, we went from 128kbps MP3 to Ogg Vorbis because of people complaining about lag from the radio. Many places in the world don't have the bandwidth that we have here in the states and running a constant 128bitsps download really puts an overhead on things. Ogg Vorbis allowed us to offer an audio quality equal or superior to 128MP3 at almost half of the bandwidth. The problem is everyone's encoder is different, some DJs like to run their encoders high, some DJs don't have the upload bandwidth to keep their connections stable, and some listerns still can't keep pace with it even at 80kbps.

Also people have trouble listening to Vorbis files. They have to get a player that supports them and WMP does not. Older versions of Winamp also choke on the vorbis format. So people have to put in a little bit of work and downloading to get it to play. I've heard people complain that they will only use WMP (I posted a plugin that will make it play on the servers page), that they like their older version of Winamp, and so forth. Trying to find a balance between quality, compatibility, and bandwidth is tricky.

It would be possible for us to offer multible streams: like high-bandwidth Ogg, low bandwidth Ogg, low bandwidth MP3 all at the same time, but this would require the DJs to have the upload ability to handle that. As a rough estimate, probably only half of our DJs could have a shot at that.

Same what Orion said.
I very much admire the dedication of those who worked on this, but I personally don't care ANYTHING about radio in general.

"Real life" radio is one of the worst things ever in my eyes. I am forced to listen to some crap top-40 song hit station the entire day because the majority likes it. Now, from what I have heard on JA-radio, it's really not hitsong material, but still, I simply don't like not being able to choose what I listen to. I listen to different kinds of music - or no music at all - depending on my mood; there is probably a chance of one in a million that a radio channel plays exactly what I want at that time when I want to hear it.

I'm sorry Tido, I used to listen but found it hard when playing on the servers. It was always too laggy for me. Either the game would lag, or the music would stop, and then start again after it had pre-buffered? I don't know if this was something to do with setup, or just normal, but I couldn't play like it sorry. If I'm not playing (very rare) I do look to see if the radio is on.

I will try harder okay :)

I listened to it everytime it was on air and I saw it, maybe we should try to get people to idle JA radio constantly like we do IRC, at least it would look like people were always listening... Bad idea, but I really appreciate the DJ's doing what they did and know they enjoyed it, I hope this service will be provided again once people show interest.
