Lightsaber Forms

Ever since I found the Lightsaber Forms project on JK3files, I've been looking up info left and right. Wikipedia seems to give the best info on them here:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lightsaber_combat

The more I looked around though, the more I found that the lightsaber forms are fairly hotly debated among SW fans.

In my opinion, the EU is probably the best thing to happen to SW as it extends the story on an infinite scope. As such, these forms are good because they give definition to what would otherwise just be seen as jedi swinging sabers around. Some however, seem to think that only the movies matter, so anything not mentioned in them never happened and just doesn't exist.

Personally, I like the forms and wish they could be added to JK3, or at least be featured in JK4, if it ever comes around.

What are your opinions on the forms?

I really love those Forms, personally, id like to master Form III :) I love how its passive, how you dont kill yet defend, but its hard to actually use that in duels and such. Because sometimes ull need to kill, and I wonder how that is done with this Form: its not likely to parry, sinds that sounds a lot like Form V (Deflecting laserbolts back, though that isnt parrying actually), and I wonder about a body-counter... (<---Nice 'n confusing description, but i cant put it more clear, sry lol)

Heh, Im probably not getting it 100 percent, so if anyone could explain to me how it works exactly, pls do so :) And would it be possible to use this form in JK3, and how? Would it be blue stance, making short, fast swings, blocking everything on its path?

I think it would be blue stance. Basically, what happens is, it's sort of like a viper style. You sit still, patiently, letting your opponent whack at you endlessly. Form III does teach parries, just that they are not employed in the same way. What will happen is, the attacker would whack away at the Soresu master. The Soresu master has his blade close to his body, deflecting all of the incoming attacks with ease. The attacker then gets tired, makes mistakes, and then the Soresu user will lash out with one quick critical strike and end the fight. Just because it is a defensive form does not make unintense. You have to be really quick to stay one step ahead of the attacker.

LOL I think you did answer your own question.:)

Form V is an agressive version of Form III. In stead of deflecting bolts away from the Jedi and the enemy, they are directed back at the enemy.

Form III is used mainly for blaster bolt deflection but its defensive style and manuevers can also be used in Saber vs Saber combat. Obi-Wan's style is a good example, very defensive.

Form II is specificly used for Saber vs Saber. Althoughits not tauht fully to Jedi because that kind of combat isn't common for Jedi. It is however the style Sith Master early on since they know Jedi are their enemy.

Yeah, in desperate situations, killing will be the only way to defend. Hmmm, the way I interpret Form III, its based upon deflecting blaster bolts into a random direction... as long as its AWAY :D To do this, the jedi uses a stance that will only expose a very small target area, which is coverred by the lightsaber. As they're being shot at, they use small moves just to defend themselves, waiting for their opponent to grow tired and/or make mistakes. As soon as they do, they will be able to hit.

Thats not Form III imo, Form II is more than that, but based upon this idea. Its a good tactic vs guns, (Dont try 2 deflect Concussionrifle fire btw, Im talking about small arms fire/blasterfire) but it can be used vs sabers too. Just stand back, relax, make small movements to block ur opponent and defend, untill he's making a mistake eventually, or gets tired and starts making mistakes due to that. Then come in and hit.

Rofl, did I just answer my own question? :P In the best case, my answer 's open to discussion I think, though Im guessing this is more or less how Form III works. But it remains a bit of a guess/personal interpretation from my side. And if this description is accurate, whats Form V/how does it work? :)

Well it would probably depend on the situation Dash. Jedi only kill when they must so if a defensive situation turned into an unavoidable offensive one, then he's switch to form V, if it was a blaster vs saber fight. Forms II and III would probably be used in a saber fight.

lol, I edited 4 of the articles on Djem So, Soresu, Sokan, and Ataru. Some of the stuff people wrote I found extremely unbelievable. However, it seems to be a pretty good article nonetheless - I would consider it canonical.

All books, games, etc, have to be cleared by LucasArts so that continuity doesn't get trodden on too heavily. In fact, some EU material (books specifically) by the more well-known authors (Zahn and Stackpole specifically) can at this point be taken to be as canon as the movies, due to their long history of interaction with Lucas.

Remember that they have to get permission from Lucasfilm (or something like that). So the books are just as authentic as the films.

The reason EU is bad i because anyone can make it. I read some of the ROTS book, and it describes things different than what happens in the movie. Nothing can be for certain in EU. But, since the movies were the first thing to come, they are official and were all made by the same person. Plus, the person who made the movies doesnt take part in EU (except for clone wars i think) so their quality is worse.

Just because it's different doesn't mean it's worse. And I think the books are better than the movies.

Actually, since Timothy Zahn's Heir to the Empire trilogy, all EU novels have been following continuity in relation to that. Any plot holes that may have occurred due to the prequels has usually been filled by a later novel. Things do get pulled and changed for novels as well per lucasfilm's wishes. Such as Zahn originally hoping for the Noghri to be the Sith. That clearly didn't fit with Lucas' plans for the future of Star Wars so a new name was chosen.

See, I don't understand why people are bothered by the EU stuff. It's not like it's being forced into the movies and overwriting anything in them, the movies are their own entity.

Also, just because something wasn't mentioned in one of 6 movies (None more than 2 1/2 hours long), doesn't mean it couldn't have happened. If you only like the movies, that's all you need acknowledge.

Of course, you realize Kyle Katarn, and the Jedi Academy themselves are part of the EU? :D

EU: Expanded Universe, Books, games... It might be that I like forms because I love roleplaying.
